Penang Medical College (PMC) was recently awarded the Foreign University Branch Campus status by the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE). Malaysia’s newest Foreign University Branch Campus (FUBC) is now named the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) and University College Dublin (UCD) Malaysia Campus – or “RCSI & UCD Malaysia Campus” (RUMC) for short.

Degrees awarded by the National University of Ireland are globally recognised and programmes offered range from foundation, bachelors, to masters and doctoral levels.

“Ireland and Malaysia have an extensive history of links and collaboration in the field of education and this accolade, the first Irish foreign university branch campus in Malaysia, is further evidence of the growing relationship between Ireland and Malaysia. We hope to see many more students moving between Ireland and Malaysia as RUMC grows and develops,” said the Irish Ambassador to Malaysia, His Excellency Eamon Hickey, who has been instrumental in cementing Irish-Malaysian education links in the region.

The PMC campus is centrally located close to the heart of George Town and within a five-minute walk of Penang Hospital, where most of the clinical teaching takes place. Located at the Sepoy Lines grounds, a four-storey academic complex houses the modern facilities essential for training medical professionals.

Established over 20 years ago, Penang Medical College provided Malaysia’s first registrable medical degree from a Malaysian private higher education institution and is wholly-owned by Irish institutions, the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) and University College Dublin (UCD). It remains the first and only full Irish university in Malaysia and the region. The PMC Clinical Skills and Education Centre in Seberang Jaya was launched in 2015 and is located next to the Seberang Jaya Hospital.

“Congratulations to Penang Medical College for being upgraded to become the tenth FUBC in Malaysia. This indicates a strong global recognition of the Malaysian higher equation system and of Malaysia as an education hub. We hope RCSI-UCD Malaysia Campus will continue to contribute towards Malaysia’s higher education excellence and nation building”, said Datin Paduka Ir. Dr. Siti Hamisah Binti Tapsir, Director-General of the Ministry of Higher Education.

Nearly 1,700 medical doctors have now graduated from PMC with globally recognised medical degrees of the National University of Ireland (NUI) and practice in Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore, Ireland, UK, Switzerland, Malta, Australia, New Zealand, USA and many other countries.

Once the Brexit process is completed in 2019, RUMC will be the only foreign branch campus in Malaysia linking the European Union with Malaysia.

An official launch ceremony will be held later this year to celebrate and mark this momentous achievement as the first of many RUMC milestones moving forward.

Datin Paduka Ir.

Datin Paduka Ir.

An Eye For Style & Philanthropy

Datin Caroline Wong.pngDatin Caroline Wong

Ambassador of International Ipoh Fashion Week

“It should be a common objective for every woman to look beautiful and healthy. I love to sing and dance, and that keeps me alive and energetic”

A philanthropic spirit curb more generosities within the human heart than you can ever imagine exist. Winston Churchill once said, “We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give” is a true and honest expression whose statement many would agree. The conception of this virtue for ‘love of mankind’, whether in big or small ways, speak of only kindness and love; an effort of walking the talk.

When the EZ Malaysia team first met Datin Caroline Wong, her smile exuded a generous and warm charisma – “a personality we all wish would come naturally to us”. Caroline’s passion for giving a hand is never far away. And throughout the years, her charitable efforts surrounding the Ipoh valley did not go unnoticed. Her regular appearance, many times in the name of friendship, naturally became philanthropic efforts and pride to many who know her. A dedicated mother from the start, she threw herself into motherhood and was actively supporting the interests of her children. These initial involvement were the start of a life-long support for many Perak swimming meets.

Coupled with her love for dressing up, she takes on stylish roles for many charity organisations, beauty pageants, and was most notable for her ambassadorship for Ipoh’s very first edition of the International IPOH Fashion Week (IIFW™) in 2017. She worked closely with Louis Sebastion, CEO of IIFW and its board members at the paediatric cancer care unit at Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun in Ipoh with the objective of connecting humanity through fashion.

The mother of three is proud of her Ipoh roots and carries that pride wherever she goes. As a public figure, her appearance shows her love for style and beauty seen in her carefully chosen attire for every occasion. “It should be a common objective for every woman to look beautiful and healthy. I love to sing and dance, and that keeps me alive and energetic”, said Datin Caroline. Her adoration for colour is also seen in her vibrant selections of attire – always respectful to herself and the host who’d invited her.

She now splits her time between maintaining a healthy lifestyle, helping those in need and as a pillar of support to her family.

Datin Caroline Wong_3.jpg

Datin Caroline Wong, as an ambassador for The International Ipoh Fashion Week Gala Dinner 2017 in Ipoh Syeun Hotel Ballroom.

WOMEN’S REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH

by Dr. Mecherl Lim

MD (MA) Naturopath (ND), Holistic Kinesiology

I would like to overview 5 common women’s reproductive health problems and aim to assist you in making informed decisions about treatment options and to suggest ways you can incorporate practical preventive strategies into your lifestyle.

Fortunately, we live in a time when women’s  health issues are more openly discussed and it’s our hope you’ll perpetuate the wisdom gleaned from the following pages by sharing this with the women-men-in your life.

PREMENSTRUAL SYNDROME (PMS) – A disorder associated with a cluster of symptoms is classed as a syndrome. About 90 percent of menstruating women experience mood changes, fluid buildup and various other problems two to 14 days before menstruating. These symptoms may disrupt everyday life in about 10 to 20 percent of women.

WHAT ARE THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS?

More than 100 different symptoms of PMS have been reported.

The most common:

  • Irritability or aggression,
  • Depression and low self-esteem,
  • Insomnia,
  • Sore breasts,
  • Abdominal bloating/constipation,
  • Headaches.
  • Food cravings and binge eating,
  • Back and muscle pain,
  • Pelvic discomfort &
  • Reduced concentration, “fuzzy” brain.

HOW IS IT DIAGNOSED?

A diagnosis is based on the pattern of symptoms experienced by women.  Sometimes medical hormone test is used.

WHAT CAUSES IT?

Australian medical experts say the cause of PMS is unknown but there is some link to emotional, physical and hormonal factors.

POSSIBLE CAUSES INCLUDE :

  • Reproductive hormone imbalances may relate to relative levels of estrogen, progesterone, prolactin, and testosterone – or their breakdown products (metabolites). It is possible to have a normal level of a particular hormone but it may be blocked because it interacts with something else.
  • Cortisol, the stress hormone, increase blood sugar levels, which gives you a boost. However, when the levels decrease, you may feel tired and crave sugary foods.
  • Aldosterone, another adrenal hormone, affects the minerals  (electrolytes) and fluid balance.
  • Stress affects reproductive hormones, and your hormones may fluctuate more than “normal”. All changes are somewhat stressful and one theory is that when the levels of any hormone drop, you may experience “withdrawal”.
  • Other causes may be nutrient deficiencies or excesses, prostaglandin deficiencies or excesses, lowered natural opiates or neurotransmitters and live /intestinal malfunctions.

HOW THE DOCTORS TREAT IT :

Current medical options include hormone therapy, oral contraceptives, antiprostaglandins (for pain), antidepressants, diuretics, and bromocriptine. Natural progesterone is probably the safest medical option, but scientific trials show it’s no better than placebo (Wyatt K, Dimmock P, Jones, et al, “Efficacy of progesterone and progestogens in management of premenstrual syndrome: a systematic review” British Medical Journal 323 (2001) : 776-80.

In a scientific study of isoflavones (which are commonly isolated from red clover or soy) for periodic breast pain (cyclical mastalgia), after three months of treatment nine out of 12 women had less pain compared with two of six on placebo. The researchers stated the isoflavones act as weak anti-estrogen and have no side effects. I suggest a more economical way of getting a good dose of isoflavones is to have a quarter of a cup of (phyto Nutri) alfalfa, mung beans or other sprouts daily

THE HOLISTIC APPROACH HERBS :

  • Chast tree produces a significant decrease in PMS symptoms compared with placebo and this has been verified in the least 15 scientific trials. Most trials lasted about three months and used low dose, guaranteed potency or standard products. example Dr Mecherl SHE 18.
  • St John wort, if the main symptoms are depression.
  • Ginkgo, for reduced concentration and breast tenderness.
  • Feverfew, to help prevent headaches.

SUPPLEMENT :

  • Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) and magnesium have helped women more than placebo, although vitamin B6 alone is not as successful as a chaste tree (She18). (Common doses are 50mg of pyridoxine and 20mg of magnesium.) *Evening primrose oil is helpful when women are deficient in essential fatty acids or have problems with oil metabolism.
  • Calcium maybe helpful but depends on diet and absorption. Some women consume six serves of dairy foods daily (equivalent to about 3000mg of calcium), which is excessive and likely to interfere with other nutrients as well as being too alkaline.
  • Taking a multivitamin/mineral supplement improves symptoms in 17 out of 23 women. This is not surprising because when women with PMS are tested, they invariably have low levels of a number of vitamins and minerals compared with women who have minimal or no PMS.

DIET

In a dietary trial for premenstrual symptoms (PMS) and period pain, 33 women followed a low-fat vegetarian diet for two menstrual cycles. The diet consisted of grains, vegetables, legumes and fruit with no restrictions on quantity. (Animal products, added oils, fried foods, avocados, olives, nuts, nut butter and seeds were eliminated.) The symptoms and pain fell significantly.

This diet would provide a high level of phytoestrogens and fiber and consequently, the body’s own estrogen uptake would be lowered and constipation/ bloating would be reduced. However, in the long term, it would cause vitamin B12 deficiency unless a supplement was taken. Eggs, lean meat, yogurt, olives, avocados, nuts, and seeds are health-enhancing foods that should be eaten regularly in moderate quantities (besides, they re enjoyable to eat and also allow you to socialize normally!).

Dietary surveys indicate women with PMS tend to eat significantly more junk food, notably sugary, fatty and salty foods. Perhaps this indicates a need for energy or consolation? On the other hand, dieting makes you hungry, lowers your blood sugar, your brain doesn’t work properly, you feel tired and you grab foods to give you quick relief. You need energy before you can achieve anything. Have a large mixed vegetable salad or soup with lunch and plenty of cooked vegetables at night to help fill you up and to avoid weight gain.

HOW CAN YOU PREVENT IT?

  • Have varied, non-restrictive diet using foods in a natural a state as possible.
  • Avoid refined carbohydrates (sugars, white flour and so on) and fad diets.
  • Lack of essential fatty acids is linked to PMS, weight gain, excessive mood changes, lowered concentration, joint and muscle pain, food cravings, fatigue and breast tenderness. The best way to get essential fatty acids is from foods such as fish (especially herring, sardine, and salmon), nuts and seeds, virgin olive oil and avocado.
  • Don’t use foods for reward or consolation.  Find other strategies such as outings, music, aromatherapy, massage or books.
  • A study showed that jogging or walking about 2.5 kilometers daily for six months give significant reductions in fluid retention, breast tenderness, and the overall symptoms picture. If you are jogging or doing aerobic exercises, make sure you wear a firm support bra or you may aggravate breast soreness.

GOOD ADVICE :

A whole food diet (with occasional treats), regular exercise and enjoying your life are basic PMS treatments.

KHAO YAI – NATURE AND ELEGANT IS A PERFECT MATCH

Khao Yai, Thailand is another hidden gem yet to be discovered by foreign visitors where nature and elegance is a perfect match. Due to its highland geographical advantage, there is never a lack of greenery and fresh air. Furthermore, the creative Thais had erected many beautiful structures that blend well with the surrounding natural backdrop. Hence, the locals have named this mountainous terrain “The Western land of Thailand”.

A very popular destination for the local elites as a weekend getaway or rejuvenation hub, Khao Yai promises plenty of fresh air with a touch of elegance, and atmospheric dining establishments serving interesting fusion options making her an absolute destination for first class travellers.

Midwinter Green
There is a famous European castle in Khao Yai that was solely built as a restaurant. It was known as The Smoke House when it was first established in early 2011. In 2014, it was rebranded as Midwinter Green by the new owner. The main building, set against a gorgeous backyard, comprises of five black-shingled peaks with a lighthouse next to it.

Primo Piazza

BEST PERSIAN, ORIENTAL AND DESIGNER RUG AND CARPET IN TOWN

Collecting hand knotted Persian carpets is a passion. Owning something beautiful and unique is a feast for the eyes. And knowing the fact that they have a value and something to pass on to the future generations make them even more worthwhile.

To some and many people, choosing the right design and colour can bring them good luck and well being. To me, choosing something I love is a relationship that is ever lasting.

I love all the Persian carpets I have acquired from Mr Waqar of Nasim Carpets@Straits Quay Penang. He consistently brings in wonderful and unique pieces which I find them hard to resist (laughing) but I have no regrets as I found that they are all unique and different from each other. I love the strong and bold contrasting colours. Unknown to most people, Persian and Turkish carpets can come in bright colours like emerald green, turquoise and contrasting yellow besides the normal red and blue. One has to be slowly educated to have the aesthetic of Mr Waqar. They come in detailed craftsmanship which takes months to years to complete. No doubt that they are not cheap but they are worth every single penny if one loves them. As I come home from a long day of work, to see a beautiful piece of art lying on the floor, it makes the rest of the day better.
