For the past forty years, the Albukhary Foundation has committed itself to the areas of education, social welfare and religion, with the intent of bridging further understanding between cultures and faiths. On the cultural front, its key role has been reflected in its initiation and ceaseless support of the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia (IAMM) in Kuala Lumpur, now the largest museum in the Asia Pacific. Its initiatives on arts and culture, now continues with the establishment of the Albukhary Foundation Gallery of the Islamic World at the British Museum. 

Opening its doors to the public on 18th October 2018, The Albukhary Foundation Gallery of the Islamic World is a major re-display of the British Museum’s world-class Islamic collection. As a comprehensive presentation of the Islamic world through art and material culture, it will underscore global connections across a vast region of the world from West Africa to Southeast Asia and reflect links between the ancient and medieval, as well as the modern worlds.

The British Museum’s collection of Islamic material uniquely represents the finest artworks alongside objects of daily life, such as modern games and musical instruments. The collection includes archaeology, decorative arts, arts of the book, shadow puppets, textiles and contemporary art. The creation of the Albukhary Foundation Gallery provides an extraordinary opportunity to display these objects in new ways that showcase the people and cultures of the Islamic world, as well as the ideas, technologies and interactions that inspired their visual culture.

Designed by Stirling Prize-winning architects Stanton Williams and in close collaboration with the British Museum, the new gallery has been created by opening up and significantly refurbishing two historic, 19th-century spaces on the first floor of the Museum. Adjacent to recently renovated European galleries, these spaces have been closed to visitors for several years.

The displays are enhanced by an engaging new programme of digital media that comprises a series of introductory films focussing on topics such as architectural decoration, ceramic technology, arts of the book and music. An accompanying website will allow for further research and exploration of the collections on display. The visitor will have the opportunity to engage directly with objects at a dedicated handling desk managed by the Museum’s volunteer programme.

The new gallery also accommodates a permanent presence for light-sensitive objects such as works on paper and textiles, which will be regularly changed. These will include stunning 14th century illustrated pages from one of the most celebrated oral traditions, the Persian epic Shahnama (Book of Kings) which will be shown alongside monumental folios of the 16th-century Indian Mughal emperor Akbar’s Hamzanama (Adventures of Hamza). Overseeing the gallery will be the curatorial team, which consists of Venetia Porter, Ladan Akbarnia, Fahmida Suleman, Zeina Klink-Hoppe, Amandine Mérat and William Greenwood.

Hartwig Fisher, Director of the British Museum, said, “The galleries and permanent displays of the British Museum’s collection show us the interconnectedness of our shared cultures. The Albukhary Foundation Gallery of the Islamic World allows us to display this world-class collection to tell a more universal story of Islam in a global context. I am grateful to the Albukhary Foundation and the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia for supporting this important new gallery.”

Meanwhile, Syed Mohamad Albukhary, Director of the Islamic Art Museum Malaysia, said, “After years of preparation, it is enormously gratifying to see the Albukhary Foundation Gallery of the Islamic World open to the public. This gallery will certainly form an educational space and will contribute in strengthening the visitors’ experience and in their understanding of the Islamic civilisation”.

The Big Business of Forging in Art and Antique

When auction houses are hammering away incredible prices on arts and antiques, it is normal that galleries would take advantage of the situation and tag items with a higher price. Hence, making owners with the knowledge of the product demand high or sometimes unreasonable premiums. Eventually, this circle will lead to a spike of fakes, imitations and forgeries. In modern technology today, news travels at high speed through the internet and social media world. It is not difficult for owners, collectors, sellers and even criminals to know what is of high demand in the current market. News like an 18th century Chinese vase found in a shoebox in an attic in France that sold for USD 19 million caused a big commotion among collectors, motivating them to embark on a hunt for such pieces hoping to have the same luck.

In a simple economical and business environment, demand dictates supply. What if the demand for genuine pieces are high but there is not enough supply? Ultimately, this will require an alternate source of supply to satisfy the market. Imitations or replicas of old pieces are thus produced and sold as new pieces for those who only seek nice affordable pieces for decoration purposes. However, unethical dealers would produce fakes and pass them off as genuine pieces with an intention to cheat the buyer. In short, replicas are legal, but if one tries to pass off a new piece as an antique it is considered a criminal offense.

The business of fake antique pieces is actually one of the fastest growing businesses in the world. In 2014, a report by Switzerland’s Fine Art Expert Institute (FAEI) stated that at least half of the artwork being circulated in the market is fake. Al Jazeera reported in 2015 the fact that buyers from China spent more than USD 5.5 billion on Chinese art and antiques in 2014, yet Sotheby’s Asian art expert, Nicolas Chow, said that: “Virtually 99.9% of what you see in the art world is wrong.” This alone poses as a rather alarming issue. Stories of collectors having porcelain makers in Jingdezhen use their genuine antique pieces as reference to duplicate high quality copies which they then place in smaller auction houses in America or Europe ‘claiming provenance’ is also a shock to hear. Some of the most recent cases in 2018 include incidents such as when the Museum of Fine Arts in Ghent was found exhibiting 26 fake works by Kazimir Malevich and Wassily Kandinsky and the Telegraph’s report on how there was only one genuine work of Amedeo Modigliani among a collection of 21 fake paintings that were on exhibition at Genoa’s Palazzo Ducale.

The fake market is now so common across the world that there is actually a museum exhibiting fakes. The Museum of Art Fakes in Vienna that opened in 2005 invited some of the master art forgers to exhibit their creations. Among them were German artist, Edgar Mrugalla, a self taught expert in copying works of Rembrandt, Picasso and Renoir. He has painted more than 3500 pieces by the time he was 65, jailed and eventually released to work for authorities to help uncover dubious artworks. On the other side of the continent, there is a famous art village called Dafen in China that produced an estimate 60% of the world’s oil paintings a few years back. People that worked in the studios and galleries were like art processors with jobs of ‘xeroxing’ famous works of artists no matter dead or alive as long as there were people in demand of the art piece. However, the Chinese government eventually intervened because cheap fakes were no longer viable in the rapid rising cost and e-commerce environment and original works were encouraged. This has however forced many art forgers to take higher risks to forge more expensive pieces in order to survive.

Although authorities around the world are clamping down on syndicates and master forgers in the art field, one must understand that to do so it is extremely difficult due to the efficiency of high tech scanners and printing machines these days. The similarity of the fake piece to the original piece is so precise that some experts hesitate on the originality of the piece and would play safe by commenting things like: “… to my best knowledge but the final decision still lies with the purchaser.” Every involved party is trying their best to keep a distance from such situations to prevent the possibility of being sued for negligence.

All in all, the business of forgery is a multi billion business in the world today. If one does not have the proper knowledge, financial means and fears being cheated on, it is highly advisable to stay away from becoming a collector.

Once Under Water 水下奇境

Over a decade after it was originally conceived, the ambitious InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland Hotel is opening to the public. Located in an abandoned quarry in Songjiang, about 30 miles from the city center, the 337 room hotel features panoramic views and several floors that are submerged underwater.

JADE+QA, under the guidance of Martin Jochman, designed the concept and facade. The award-winning design calls for 19 floors, 17 of which plunge down into the depths of the quarry below ground level. Two of the 17 underground floors are actually submerged in a 33-foot-deep aquarium.

One of the most stunning architectural features of the complex is the glass “waterfall” that spills down the side of the quarry and houses an atrium. A glass “waterfall” runs the height of the 19-floor building, housing an indoor atrium.

The InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland Hotel is located in an abandoned quarry and includes an adventure sports center. The InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland is accepting reservations for November 20, 2018 onwards with prices starting at ¥3,380 ($487).

从最初构想的开始历经逾 10 个年头后,上海佘山世贸洲际酒店 (InterContinental Shanghai) 诞生了,这家“奇境”酒店正式开业和对外开放。酒店位于松江一个废弃的采矿坑,距离市中心大约 30 英里,设有 337 间拥有全景的豪华客房,而几层楼皆位于水下。

著名国际建筑团队JADE+QA在英国设计Martin Jochman的指导下呈现了概念和立面设计。这个屡获殊荣的设计拥有19层楼,其中17层深入地下采矿坑的深处。17层地下中的两层实际上被淹没在33英尺深的水族馆。

另外,最令人惊叹的建筑特色之一是玻璃“瀑布”,它从采矿坑一侧倾泻并形成一个中庭。上海佘山世贸洲际酒店位于一个成功“点石成金”的废弃采矿坑,同时是一个探险户外活动中心。酒店从 2018 11 20 日起接受预订,价格从 3380人民币起跳 (487美元)。

Gordon Ramsay’s first solo restaurant that opened in 1998 and later in 2001, earned him his first three-Michelin star that made him the first Scottish chef to have won the ultimate status. Over the years, Ramsay has transformed from a chef to a celebrity, internationally renowned and holding a number of Michelin stars, Ramsay has opened a string of successful restaurants across the globe, from Italy to the United States. However, this Restaurant Gordon Ramsay is the beginning of all the successful stories. In 2015, Matt Abé was appointed Chef de Cuisine of the restaurant.

Royalty is a novelty. So unless you’re born into it or through marriage, most of us just live ordinary lives. But in the property world, you can become royalty through the old fashioned way of hard work and merit. That is how executive chairman of Ideal Property Group, Tan Sri Datuk Alex Ooi became the “Property King” of Penang. He has definitely earned this commendable title through his dedication and passion. From nothing, he started Ideal Property Group in 1997 and is now an award winning and well known Penang institution with an array of impressive local and international projects under its belt.

Some of its notable developments include the Attwood Business Centre with a gross development value (GDV) of USD15 million in Cambodia in 2006 and I-Avenue in 2007. Ooi has wrapped up SummerSkye Residences with Solaria Residences and is looking forward to the completion of One Foresta in January 2019.

With such a vast portfolio of projects and more in the pipeline, the 46 year old remains humble and says that property is a passion, rather than an ambition. He is also the chairman for FIABCI Malaysia Chapter Penang Branch, the vice president for Penang Chinese Chamber and Commerce and Convenor for Penang Development, Construction and Management Committee (a Group under Penang Chinese Chamber of Commerce).

Ooi strongly envisions the improvement of Penang’s transportation infrastructure and currently has a 20% stake in SRS Consortium Sdn Bhd, the project delivery partner of the Penang Transport Master Plan (PTMP). The PTMP is a RM27 billion investment that was formed by the Penang state government to improve transportation by providing alternative transportation modes to combat worsening traffic congestion – such as Light Rail Transit (LRT) and monorail lines.

“While I have multiple roles, what’s really important to me is CSR for the Penang community. Some of my causes were to build infrastructure and amenities like markets, hawker stalls, community centers, a fire station for the Sri Tanjung voluntary firemen. I’ve also supported the build of the St.John service centre, constructed the new access road of Persiaran Rajawali and widened the road along Jalan Tun Dr. Awang. We’ve also raised the road level and upgraded the drainage system in Relau, Bayan Lepas for flood mitigation purposes,” says Ooi, who is also a dedicated family man.

“While I have multiple roles, one thing that is important to me is carrying out CSR for the Penang community.”

He believes that Ideal Property Group has been successful because of its consistent CSR projects. On the business side, Ooi maintains his competitive advantage by delivering sustainable community-oriented development rather than offering just tower blocks as shelter.

“We’re prudent in planning developments where the surrounding environment is well taken care of. We want to ensure that the living space of the community consists of value added features such as major public amenities and upgraded infrastructures,” he said.

By doing this, the Property King will continue to reign as he will create more community-oriented and affordable development and at the same time, deliver more property gems and ultimately contribute to the nation’s economy.

Looking amazingly young for the title, Dato’ Henry Goh gives a fresh take to the young urbane entrepreneur.  An authentic millennial success with an Ivy League education, th riving technology company and a title to boot, Goh is refreshingly humble, excited about life and work, and driven by aspirations instead of cash flow.  Most women, and even some men perhaps, are disappointed that he is spoken for.

MACROKIOSK Bhd, a digital enabler that provides technology solutions to businesses in the digital economic world, is set up by three brothers – one of them being Dato’ Henry Goh. Goh studied electrical engineering and got his MBA from Boston University, Massachusetts. “My brothers and I started this business 18 years ago for some extra pocket money. Whatever I achieved in this company kind of defines what I am today.  A good part of my working life is invested in this company.”

Information technology was an obvious choice when the brothers talked about operating a business in 1996.  It started with the basics, teaching people how to use Microsoft and Excel.  Through their father’s mobile phone master distributorship and Malaysia’s information age emergence, the company gained more momentum.  “Nothing extraordinary, there was no eureka moment but through my dad we gained access to the world of SMS and from there on worked towards mobile technology.”

Besides providing digital economic solutions, MACROKIOSK is also passionate about contributing to the country, women empowerment and healthy business ethos.

Although started by three brothers, MACROKIOSK was never intended to be a family-run company. “We fight but we are brothers and we stick together.  Trust is implicit.  We also have a great team of staff, managers and department heads who helped us shape our success story.”

Pioneers of the ‘one-time password’ MACROKIOSK changed the landscape of digital economy, bringing businesses closer to more than seven billion consumers, some of whom may not read newspapers, watch TV or billboards.

“I believe almost everyone in Malaysia has used our services. In 2003 we helped one of the largest banks in Malaysia enable online banking. Today MACROKIOSK powers 90% of the banks in Malaysia in terms of technology.”

As for his own power, Goh recharges by travelling. He has covered more than 70 cities worldwide and the entire European continent. “I see and learn during my travels. It teaches me respect and humility.” And when he is not collecting luxury watches, Goh takes to the skies, soaring his way to attain his Private Pilot Licence.

对比耀眼的创业成就,拿督吴志兴给人的第一眼印象只能说,真是年轻得令人欣羡。这位温文尔雅的青年企业家展现了新鲜视角。作为一名从常春藤盟校名牌大学受教育、运营蓬勃发展的科技公司和真正为千禧一代的成功人士,他保持谦逊态度,对生活和工作热情满满,具有深远抱负,但却并非被资金所驱动。有成就也已成家,让男人羡慕让女人嫉妒。

MACROKIOSK Bhd 是一家跨国移动技术供应商,为电子数字经济领域的通讯业务提供各项技术和解决方案。这家目前如日中天的新锐科技企业由 3 名兄弟联合创立,其中一名创始人为吴志兴。吴志兴主修电气工程科系,并拥有美国马萨诸塞州波士顿大学工商管理硕士学位。“我和其他兄弟在 18 年前开办公司的初衷只是想多赚一些零用钱。无论我在这家公司创造了怎样的成就,都能定义今天的我,我大部分最美好的职业生涯都献给了公司。”

而“一次性支付密码”的先锋思维改变了电子数字经济的格局,拉近企业与 70 多亿消费者之间的距离,包括一些平常可能不看报纸、电视或广告牌的人们。

“我相信几乎所有马来西亚人都使用过我们的服务。2003 年,我们协助我国最大的银行之一实践了网上银行。如今,就移动技术而言,MACROKIOSK 覆盖了国内 90% 的银行系统。”

至于吴志兴本身的动力充电方式来自旅行。他已经走遍了全球 70 多个城市和整个欧洲大陆。“我在旅行中观察和学习,并且让我更深刻的理解尊重和谦卑。” 当他不收集奢侈表的时候,他就会在天空翱翔,考取私人飞行员执照。

More than often, advertisements especially outdoor billboards are dominated by the big boys of the business because of the high cost production. Today, digital technology offers greater creative opportunities for businesses. It allows flexibility and affordability that can benefit millions of small and medium scale enterprises in Malaysia to reach out to potential customers in more attractive formats.

Emphasise Communication Sdn Bhd (Emphasise), a new start-up company, owns and manages LED billboards branded AIM, is offering affordable digital advertising ad slots that makes it possible for small and medium-scale entrepreneurs to have equal brand presence as the bigger brand businesses.

Sheon Hoo Huan, Chief Executive Officer of Emphasise, envisioned a transformation of the local outdoor electronic advertising market. “There are close to a million small and medium scale enterprises in Malaysia with about 90 per cent of them in the service sector. We want to help them to build their brands in half the time it normally takes for entrepreneurs to start branding exercises on mass medium. When we see an outdoor advertisement, we perceive that the company has reached a certain level of financial strength to spend on high cost production. It takes time to get there and yet, brand awareness is essential to improving the market. One can’t be done without the other. Time vs resources become success essential.”

Most entrepreneurs resort to digital marketing because the cost and market reach is within control and resources.

“Outdoor mediums tap into the subconscious mind. Its vivid and bright display attracts the attention of passer-bys instantly. The message that is on the display will subconsciously become information in your mind and the great thing about the subconscious mind is that it is always “on”. Regardless of what you do, it is active day and night.”

AIM LED Billboards was the first to cover a whole 360° of a roundabout. It’s located at a high traffic area with at least 150,000 vehicles passing a day.

“户外广告媒体会敲击人的潜意识。因为生动而明亮的显示屏能够轻易获取路人的注意,展示内容会化为脑海中潜意识的信息,而潜意识的厉害之处在于它总是“开启”的,无论人们在做什么,白昼与黑夜它依旧保持活跃。”

Maestro Dato Woon Wen Kin.png“I wanted to prove that one is never too old to make music. In fact, many of the world’s best conductors go on till their 80s or 90s.”

Maestro Dato’ Woon Wen Kin is a prolific performer, a passionate educator and the most experienced symphony orchestra conductor in Malaysia. In England, he participated in the International Oxford Bach Festival, the Annual Sir Hendry Wood’s Concerts; worked for the London Opera Centre and recorded several violin recitals for the BBC Overseas Service. Subsequently, he was awarded a conducting scholarship by the Federal Republic of Germany to study advance conducting.

Instead of furthering his career abroad, he decided to return to Malaysia and he began to promote and develop orchestral music ever since. In 1978, he was appointed by the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports to establish the National Music Camp and served as the music director. In addition, he was appointed the principal conductor of the 1st ASEAN Youth Music Workshop in 1980. In 1991, he was also appointed as the advisor and the conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra.

In 1980, Dato’ Woon founded the Penang Symphony Society and served as its President and Music Director. Through the Society, he has contributed towards the rise of orchestral music in Penang and Malaysia. He has also nurtured thousands of talented musicians, who are now established musicians in academics and performances, furthering the initiatives of promoting orchestral music locally and worldwide in many countries. Today, the Society houses the Penang Symphony Orchestra, Penang Wind Orchestra and Penang Junior Orchestra. Over the years, Dato’ Woon has led these orchestras to perform in Australia, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and Thailand.

As a globally respected musician, he has been invited as a guest conductor to perform in China, Germany, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Philippines and USA; as well as an adjudicator in the International Mozart Competition for Young Musicians Festival and the International Nier Violin Competition.

He has received many awards for his contributions in music and culture. He has received the Australia’s Oversea Culture Award, the Schubert Medal Award by the Vienna City, the Anugerah Karyawar Seni Musik (Best Director of Music), the Asia-Pacific Cultural Industry Exhibition by China, the Cultural Award in Music, the Lifetime Achievement Award, to name a few.

拿督温文京指挥是一位杰出的演奏家、教育家,也是马来西亚最资深的指挥。在英国的时候,他参与了国际牛津巴赫音乐节, 年度亨德利伍德爵士音乐会;也曾在伦敦歌剧院工作,并为BBC海外服务部录制了几首小提琴演奏会。随后,他荣获德意志联邦共和国奖学金,以专研高级指挥课程。

以其在国外进一步发展自己的职业生涯,他决定回国推广和发展交响乐。在1978年,他被文化、青年和体育部任命开创全国音乐营,并担任其音乐总监。此外,他还被任命为1980年第一届东盟青年音乐会的首席指挥。1991年,他也被任命为国家交响乐团的顾问和指挥。

1980年,拿督温文京创立了槟州交响乐团协会,并担任其主席和音乐总监。通过该协会,他为槟城和马来西亚的交响乐兴起做出了极大的贡献。他还培养了数千名才华横溢的音乐家,各自成为学术界和表演界的知名音乐家,再延续进推广本地和全世界交响乐的重任。今天,槟州交响乐团协会设有槟州交响乐团,槟城吹管乐团和槟州少青交响乐团。多年来,拿督温文京带领这些乐团在澳大利亚,中国,香港,日本,新加坡,韩国,台湾和泰国演出。

作为一位受国际受尊敬的音乐家,他受邀担任客座指挥,在中国,德国,印度尼西亚,马来西亚,新加坡,台湾,泰国,菲律宾和美国演出; 也受邀当国际莫扎特青年音乐家比赛和国际尼尔小提琴比赛的评审员。
