The Fast & Furious – Lamborghini Way 速度及激情

Local driver Afiq Yazid and Japanese team mate Toshiyuki Ochiai recently came top place at the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo Asia series 2016 held over at Malaysia’s famous international F1 circuit and the famed Fuji International Speedway in Japan.

Yazid, a graduate of Lamborghini’s Young Driver Program, has been competing in the series for four years running and has come a long way since his first foray into the world of Lamborghini racing. He has shown what can be achieved with dedication and commitment, performing tremendously well in the past two seasons.

The race wraps up after a weekend of racing highlights in Fuji, drivers and teams now focus their attention towards the sixth Asia series race and Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo World Final, both in Valencia. The World Final in December will see the convergence of competitors from all three international series – European, North American and Asian – on the Ricardo Tormo Circuit, which will see a head-to-head competition for a place on the top steps of the global podium – as the Super Trofeo World Champion.

“The services in our industry are becoming increasing commoditised but of course our service is not a commodity,at Crown we aim to offer our customers an experience.”

As the managing director of Crown Malaysia, Leon Hulme is at the helm of one of the largest mobility & information management chains in the world.  An evolved and culturally sophisticated individual, Hulme oversees Crown Malaysia’s comprehensive portfolios like domestic and international relocation, secure storage and information management facilities, destination settling-in, immigration services, employee and family support.

Never a tourist but always the traveller in Asia, and now a resident in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Hulme originally joined Crown Malaysia in 1999.  He held a variety of roles in several Crown offices in Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, and most recently Thailand, where he served as Country Manager before being promoted to his current position.

Hulme hails from an industrial Birmingham, the second largest city in the UK, and claims that he never studied.  “I never cared much for school.  I was working at 13 and dropped out of school at 16 to go into full time employment.  At that time I was holding down three or four jobs.”  During his last year in school, his school career officer told him this, “If you don’t end up unemployed and you manage to get a job, let’s say, in a factory, then you would have done very well.”  Unfazed Hulme sat there and thought to himself, “I bet my career ends up being more successful than yours.”

Born in Australia, Hulme left the continent down under for Great Britain when he was four.  “Both my parents are English.”  Not from a moneyed background, Hulme considers himself lucky to have good parents with upright principles.  “There wasn’t a lot of money in the house but my parents were determined not to live off the government, though we would have been more comfortable claiming social security than working in relatively low paid jobs.”

Sound work ethics were instilled in young Hulme.  “I believed in hard work, I believed in proving myself and then things would come as a result of that.  My parents used to say to me – ‘Nobody wants to give a job or work with somebody that they don’t like’.  So if I could get on with people, work hard, be flexible, prove myself, then the opportunities would present itself. I think if you’re street smart, have good work ethics, common sense, the ability to communicate and get on with people are fundamentals that can take you a long way.”

Speaking on mentors, Hulme has this to impart, “Over the years I have met many people who have inspired me.  I am always willing to listen and surround myself with people who inspire me. Jim Thompson, my chairman is one such person.

Jim is serious about work, a great communicator and I really admire his drive for quality, these traits you see in many of Crown’s staff and the Country Managers I have had as bosses over the years.  It is important to Jim and his employee’s that Crown is recognised as the Rolls Royce in this industry.”

“I would like to be able to look back and think that, I had a positive impact on my colleagues and that I might have in some ways helped them surpass even their own expectations.”

Rather than immediate short term financial gains, Crown is more focussed on long term quality services, meaningful partnership with its clients and our contribution to our local communities.  “Our organisation is filled with tremendous people with great experience.  Some of them have been with us and in this industry for more than 35 years and can offer a wealth of information and knowledge to our clientele.  The people I work with in Malaysia are absolutely incredible.  We have known each other for so long that when I came back instead of shaking hands, as a new MD might normally do, we hugged” says the happy expatriate.   

Hulme forecasts a bright future for Crown Malaysia.  “This industry will continue to flourish.  The world is so small.  People are constantly moving.  It is a mobile workforce with a lot of assignees moving around the world.  I have seen a lot of changes in 16 years where we have gone from HR-driven decision making to procurement-driven decision making these days.  Though we are not selling a commodity, our services have become much commoditised, with price as an increasingly key factor.  Of course it is not a commodity because at Crown we deliver an experience.  If someone is relocating overseas with their family, we make sure they arrive at their destination comfortable and focused and not distracted by anything, in order for them to perform in their new assignment immediately.   We are not a commodity trading on the cheapest price, more of a mature quality service that supports you as you embark on the next chapter in your corporate and family life.

To cater to the fine art business, Crown Malaysia is the first to set up an art vault with premium security protocols, climate-control and fire suppression features.  “We have a healthy fine art business and are moving quite a lot of works of high value.  The art vault looks like something you might store gold bullions that only James Bond might attempt to break in,” Hulme shares and chuckles.

Outside work, the Englishman in him plays football, and does a bit of cycling.  He beams as he speaks of his family.  “My wife Akiyo is Japanese and I am very lucky that she is willing to give up her career as a successful production manager for a television commercial company in Japan to follow me gallivanting around the world. Akiyo is a very strong woman and adaptable to move with me to Korea, Thailand and now Malaysia.  We are really a team.  She manages everything that could potentially get in the way of me focussing on my work.  My son Noah is six years old.  He speaks English, Japanese and Thai as he was born and raised in Thailand.”     

As a worldly corporate warrior, Hulme would like to be able to look back and think that, “I had a positive impact on my colleagues and the people who worked with me, and that I might have, perhaps, in some ways, helped them surpass their own expectations.”

来自英国第二大工业城市伯明翰 ,他声称从未注重读书。“我从不关心学业。我13岁开始工作,16岁就辍学进入全职就业。”当他最后一年在学校,学校的就业咨询人员告诉他,如果最终没失业,他是能得到工作,比如在工厂就业,肯定能做得很好。Leon 当时回答:“我想我以后的工作肯定比你还成功。”

出生在澳大利亚,由于父母是英国人,Leon在4岁时就定居英国。虽然不是富裕的背景,但他认为父母传递了良好的正直原则。“我们家里没太多钱,但是我父母决心不依靠政府,尽管获得社会保障相对微薄工作收入来的更简单舒服。”

这种职业道德灌输予年轻的他,Leon相信努力工作和证明自己,然后好事就会上门。父母曾经说过:没人愿意提供工作或者和他们不喜欢的人一起工作。如果能与人相处,努力而灵活的工作来肯定自己,机会将显现。他认为靠着街头智慧、职业道德、常识与沟通能力,并且懂得与人相处,就是让人可以走得更远的不二法门。

“这些年来遇到许多激励我的人,我愿意倾听并且让周围的人鞭策着我。我们的创始人兼主席Jim Thompson就是这样一个人。Jim认真工作,是非常伟大的沟通者,我钦服于他的驱动能量,而类似特征造就集团的壮大,尤其是我多年来遇上的许多精英员工和驻外经理。Jim和所有员工都是让嘉柏集团成为此行业领域“劳斯莱斯”的缔造者。”

工作外的闲暇时间,这名英国人爱好踢足球和骑单车。他微笑地叙述家庭。“我的妻子Akiyo是日本人,我很幸运,作为一名成功的电视广告公司制作经理,她愿意放弃在日本的事业,跟着我全世界到处走。Akiyo是一个非常坚强的女人,可以适应和我搬迁到韩国、泰国和马来西亚,我们是一个团队,她管理一切琐碎事务,让我可以集中工作。我的6岁儿子Noah,他擅长说英语,日语和泰语,因为他在泰国出生和长大。”

作为身经百战的企业战士,Leon回顾与希望积极影响他的同事或一起工作的人。“我可能或也许在某种程度上,协助他们超越自己的期望。”

Taking The Hospitality Industry to Another Level 升华酒店业新概念

The hospitality industry is a challenging one that can be susceptible to external factors as well as local factors but after 44 years in this industry, Dato’ Eric Lim Hock Kheng has got the ups and downs pat to be able to face any challenges without any qualms.

Dato’ Lim first became involved in the hospitality industry in the tours and travel sector in early 1971. What first piqued his interest for the travel industry was the few times he helped visitors around the island when he was younger. “I used to drive my father to work and after that, I have his car at my disposal so I could drive around and when I saw visitors looking at maps and confused, I stopped to help them, I even gave them lifts,” he said.

The interest to help visitors grew into a lifelong passion that lasted over four decades and there is no sign of him regretting going into this industry. Dato’ Lim joined Shangri-La International in Penang in 1979 and for the next 18 years, was instrumental in the development of the Shangri-La group of hotels in Penang.

“I have been in the hospitality industry right from the start and till today, the passion is still there,” he shared. On top of leading CHM as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dato’ Lim has also served in various other capacities that included the formation of the Malaysian Association of Hotels, Penang chapter in 2001. He has also served in various trade bodies such as the IMT-GT Tourism Sectorial, Pacific Area Travel Association, Penang Hoteliers Association, Penang Tourist Centre and State Tourism Council and one of the founding members of Upper Penang Road Society.

He was last based in Shangri-La International in Bali, Indonesia before moving back to Penang to spearhead the Cititel brand name in 1996. Since then, Cititel Hotel Management Sdn Bhd has grown in leaps and bounds with over 3,800 rooms under its portfolio of hotel brands that included Cititel, Cititel Express, MiCasa and St Giles.

Taking a leaf from the highly successful St Giles London and Heathrow and The Tuscany and The Court, New York,  Cititel Hotel Management (CHM) imported the group’s UK St Giles Brand to Asia by introducing a 512-room St Giles Makati in Philippines in mid-2010. It also rebranded The Boulevard and The Gardens Hotel & Residences as St Giles Hotel. Just recently, St Giles The Wembley was opened in George Town, adding another 415-room to the island state.

Prior to this, CHM introduced its second brand, Cititel Express, to fit into a different market segment. This is a value-based budget accommodation, complete with functional and basic amenities, with a “Smart, Clean and Simple” concept. There are now Cititel Express in Kota Kinabalu, Ipoh and most recently, Penang.

CHM also expanded its reach into the extended-stay segment with its two serviced residences that included the MiCasa All Suite Hotel in Kuala Lumpur City Centre.

“This means we have more options to offer,” Dato’ Lim says of the additional rooms. The hotelier may have been in the industry for many years but he does not become complacent. He continues to watch the market trends like a hawk and is always a step ahead in anticipation of what’s next.

“We’ve been through several cycles in our industry and it is very vulnerable to all sorts of developments, from politics to economy to diseases,” he said. One has to always be alert to market demands and changes to be able to incorporate marketing intelligence into the hotels’ strategy.

Another important factor to remaining strong in the industry is to always encourage and train up a workforce that is as passionate about the industry as he is. It is no easy task with fewer young employees having a passion for such a demanding industry but Dato’ Lim is not one to give up easily.

“I will continue to encourage and motivate our personnel to keep the passion alive and the professionalism intact because our human resource is an important component of the industry.”

Looking forward, Dato’ Lim said CHM will continue to seek opportunities in key Asian cities to build up its portfolio of hotels especially in the three and four star categories. “We are always looking towards adding more rooms and hotels in and outside of Malaysia,” he said.

以障碍赛来形容酒店行业可谓非常贴切,充斥未知与布满荆棘,极易受到外界因素侵袭和影响。但对于鏖战酒店领域44年,历经行业高低潮的拿督林福庆来说,应对挑战已是毫无疑虑,驾轻就熟。

1971年初,林福庆开始踏足酒店旅游业。而激发他加入行业是源自槟岛年轻热情时代的经历。“我载送父亲上班后,就开着他的车子到处逛,当目睹困惑的游客们看着地图,我常主动停车协助,甚至让他们搭顺风车。”

这个简单纯粹的兴趣却成了维持40年的激情所在,并且无怨无悔。他在1979年加入香格里拉国际集团,往后18年间落力推动着香格里拉酒店在槟城的业务。

他说,从开始到现在,对行业的热爱丝毫不减。作为带领CHM的董事经理兼首席执行员,林福庆展现多样领导魅力,包括2001年成立马来西亚酒店协会槟城分会。他也参与各种贸易旅游组织如印马泰成長三角旅游部、太平洋区域旅游协会、槟城酒店业者协会,槟城旅游中心和槟州旅游委员会,也是槟榔路上环协会的创始成员之一。

1996年,林福庆回到槟城担任龙城酒店(Cititel Hotel)的品牌推广先锋,在这之前,他驻扎于印尼巴厘岛的香格里拉国际集团。此后,龙城酒店管理有限公司(Cititel Hotel Management Sdn Bhd)飞速增长,逾3800间客房的酒店连锁品牌,其中包括龙城酒店、龙城快捷酒店(Cititel Express)米卡萨酒店(MiCasa)和圣吉尔斯酒店(St Giles)。

而取经于伦敦、希思罗,托斯卡纳与纽约圣吉尔斯酒店的成功模式,龙城酒店管理(CHM)也积极“进口”英国的圣吉尔斯(St Giles)品牌到亚洲,首先在2010年中旬引入一家拥有512间客房的圣吉尔斯酒店在菲律宾的马卡迪(Makati),接着采取品牌更名,将The Boulevard、The Gardens和Residences等酒店转为圣吉尔斯酒店。而拥有415间客房的圣吉尔斯温布利(St Giles The Wembley)最近在槟城乔治市盛大开业。

另外,关键因素是这个领域总是鼓励与培训员工,尤其和他一样热爱行业者。这并非易事,具备类似热情的年轻员工占了少数,但林福庆绝非轻言放弃的人。“我将继续激励我们的人员,维持活力激情和完美专业,人力资源是行业最轴心的组成部分。”

至于展望未来,林福庆认为CHM将继续在亚洲主要城市寻找机会,建立符合投资组合的酒店,特别是3-4星级类别。他对EZ表示,他们期待在马来西亚内外增设更多酒店和客房。

Loh Guan Lye Specialists Centre 41 Years of Caring & Healing the Story Goes On…

Like many successful stories, it all started with a dream. The dream of the Late Datuk Dr Loh Guan Lye was to set up a private hospital ‘to reciprocate the support given to him by his patients and well-wishers over the years, and to also complement the increasingly overcrowded facilities of government hospitals. The hospital is a place where the public can seek specialist care and where specialists can practise good medicine’. The hospital then was named ‘The Specialists Centre’ which was later renamed LohGuanLye Specialists Centre (LSC) in1996, in honour of the late Datuk Dr Loh Guan Lye. The dream started in 1975 and the Centre is now 41 years old. Till today it is still family-owned and has been caring for more than three generations of patients.

The son, Mr Kelvin H Y Loh, Chairman and Managing Director, and the grandson, Mr Nicholas S W Loh, Executive Director, are also both successful Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologists practising in the hospital.

The unique story then continues with Dr Mary Quah, Chief Executive Officer, the driving force behind LSC, a non-family member, managing a family business in a One Big LSC Family way. She joined LSC in 1982 and has worked with three generations of the Loh family.

A visionary leader who leads with passion, Dr Mary Quah then made the dream into a vision and it became a reality with a lot of hard work and effort, dedication and commitment from everyone in LSC, making LSC to what it is today, one of the leading healthcare in the region, leading into the future.

In response to the earnest requests of patients for additional facilities and services, especially for cancer treatment, Dr Mary Quah was instrumental in the planning and development of the new wing in Macalister Road, from the architectural design and layout to the interior design and even the colour scheme with patient’s comfort in mind.  With this new wing, which was completed in 2009, LSC now has three wings, namely the Main Wing, Women and Children’s Wing and the Diagnostic Wing, offering a very comprehensive range of facilities and services including the treatment of cancer and heart diseases.

With her leadership, LSC has overcome many challenges and has come out stronger than ever. LSC has also achieved many milestones, accreditations, various awards and accolades internationally and locally.

According to Dr Mary Quah, the culture of LSC is one of putting our heart and soul into everything we do, be proud of what we are doing and do our best. We strive to be the best and care for our patients with the best in human resource and technology to ensure good outcome.

Dr Mary Quah always believes in putting people first as ‘it’s the people who move an organisation’. When a leader leads an organisation with passion, and always does the right thing for the organisation and its people……that is the key success factor. Some of her inspiring phrases to the team include….’the business belongs to you, you take care of the business, we take care of you, the organisation grows, you grow’,  ‘everybody in this organisation is important, we do not employ unimportant people’, ‘customise your handling of people’. She takes pride in her team and is thankful to have such a caring team of dedicated and committed Management, Doctors and Staff in the organisation, as well as Mr Kelvin Loh and Mr Nicholas Loh for believing in the team and their support.

Colourful Dreams Floating in the Air 台湾台东国际热气球节 : 梦想升空

Since year 2011, many colourful and vibrant hot air balloons can be seen floating in Taitung City’s stunning blue sky every summer. Those amazing balloons carry passengers slowly in the air, soaring above the mountains, fields and lakes, bringing them closer to the sky for a breathtaking 360 degree view of picturesque beauty.

Travel to Taiwan and you will have a whole summer to ride one of these colourful hot air balloons and have your dreams come true! Taitung Taiwan International Balloon Festival is coming to its 6th year in 2016. It will kick start on 1 July and end on 7 August. In 2014, BBC named it as one of the Top 10 Hot Air Balloon Festivals around the world. One of Taiwan renowned magazine Common Wealth also appraised this as one of the Top 5 festivals in Taiwan.

Although the main event takes place in Luye Gaotai township, a series of other activities such as the fantastic Night Glows concert will take place across different towsnships such as Jhihben hot spring area at Beinan Township and Dapo Pond at Chihshang Township. While at Sansiantai at Chenggong Township and The Aurora Garden at Taimali Township, you can enjoy the Morning Glow. Be it in the daytime or at night, those performances are promised to bring upon great and memorable experiences to the audiences.

Due to the wind direction and safety concerns, hot air balloon rides are only available in the early morning and evening. Once you come to beautiful Taitung for the hot air balloon festival, remember to pamper yourself by staying for a few more days and embrace this lovely land.

Dala’il al-Khayrat Prayer Manuscripts From The 16th To 19th Centuries

One of the most celebrated manuscripts of the Islamic world is the Dala’il al-Khayrat, which means Waymarks of Benefits. It is a famous collection of prayers for Prophet Muhammad (SAW), which was written by the Moroccan Sufi and Islamic scholar Muhammad Sulaiman al-Jazuli ash Shadhili, who died in 1465. Alongside the prayers are beautifully-illuminated pages decorated in colourful pigments and gold leaf.

Since it was first inscribed, the Dala’il al-Khayrat has inspired calligraphers, illuminators and painters of court ateliers from around the world. They take great pains to reproduce these sumptuous illustrated and illuminated manuscripts and in the process contribute to its rich and diverse heritage.

In order to reveal the outstanding history and artistry of the Dala’il al-Khayrat, the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia (IAMM) in Kuala Lumpur is showcasing an exhibition entitled Dala’il al-Khayrat: Prayer Manuscripts From The 16th To 19th Centuries.  The exhibition showcases the museum’s own collection of some of the finest Dala’il al-Khayrat copies from its native land, Morocco, to as far as East Turkistan and China.

The exhibition is divided into several sections, beginning with the history of the Dala’il al-Khayrat and its author, Imam Al-Jazuli, whose ancestry can be traced to Imam Hassan ibn Ali, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (SAW). Among the highlights are exquisite Moroccan copies and a rare monumental single-page Dala’il Al-Khayrat signed by Alhafiz Mahbub Muhammad. The exhibition enables visitors to uncover the contents of the Dala’il Al-Khayrat and appreciate its content, the 8 ahzab (days of recitation) and other main elements.

 Meanwhile, a special section of the exhibition teaches visitors how to distinguish the regional characteristics of the Dala’il al-Khayrat, showing beautiful masterpieces from North Africa, Central Asia, Turkey, Indian Subcontinent, China and South East Asia. The most beautiful part of these manuscripts are the illustrations of the two holiest sites in Islam – the An Nabawi Mosque in Madinah and Al Haram Mosque in Mecca. At the beginning of this section, Imam Al-Jazuli wrote: “This is the description of Al-Rawdah Al-Mubarakah (the Blessed Garden) in which the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) is buried, together with his two companions Abu Bakr (RA) and Umar (RA)”. In reference to this passage, illuminators and painters of subsequent centuries have been encouraged to add an illustration, which later became the focal point of the Dala’il al-Khayrat.

Last, but not least, is a dedicated section for Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and an explanation for the tradition of praising the Prophet, as well as other living Islamic traditions that are still being practiced today. In conjunction with the exhibition, the IAMM has published a comprehensive catalogue featuring these celebrated manuscripts. Showcasing more than 100 artefacts from the IAMM collection, the catalogue unveils the beauty and intricacy of the pages of the Dala’il al-Khayrat and other related artefacts.

The Dala’il al-Khayrat exhibition will be on display for four months at Special Gallery 1 of the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia from 11th March 2016 until 31st August 2016.

Taking Eye Care to Another Level

Leading an established market leader in refractive surgeries is no easy task but for a determined and visionary young woman, it is a challenge worth taking. Sandy Tan joined Optimax Eye Specialist more than two years ago and today, she is leading the organisation as its Chief Executive Officer with exciting plans to further enhance the Optimax brand.

INPG55-02.pngShe is a law graduate and was also an image consultant in the fashion industry. Today, she is leading Optimax Eye Specialist to greater heights with its own full fledged specialists hospital in Kuala Lumpur that is coming up in a few years’ time.

It could be said that Sandy Tan was born into a world of privilege as the eldest daughter of Optimax founder Dato’ Tan Boon Hock but the position she held today speaks more of her capabilities in leading the organisation than her station in life. The eloquent 30-year-old has big dreams for the company and she is diligently working her way towards achieving it.

“In 10 years, we will be a full fledged hospital providing health care with the latest technology and the best in customer care,” she said of her vision for Optimax Eye Specialist. Even now, plans are underway to construct an Optimax Eye Hospital in Kuala Lumpur, just 10 minutes away from the headquarters in Mont Kiara.

Sandy first started her full time career in Optimax more than two years ago after brief stints in banking and the fashion industry. She first gained experience as a Capital Market and Equity Department Executive before becoming an image consultant and later, a buyer at homegrown fashion label British India where she honed an acute and irrefutable sense of marketing.

She joined Optimax as the Head of Marketing and this is one decision that she does not regret as she found it an exciting experience that sets the pace for her to assume her current role as the Chief Executive Officer. “I grew up learning about Optimax from my father when he came home and talked about work, so working here is an easy transition from my previous jobs,” she said.

She does not see her young age as a deterrent in fulfilling the heavy responsibility of leading Optimax but instead sees it as an advantage as she could work out marketing and branding that appealed to the younger generation. “Optimax has been around for 21 years so it is time to make it trendier now to appeal to the younger generation,” she said.

This was how the cute round-eyed blue Opti – the Optimax mascot – was introduced last year. It is one of the marketing methods, along with a comprehensive social media presence, introduced to push the Optimax brand further amongst the young and old.

Optimax today is a leading eye care specialist centre that provided eye care services from eye examination to laser vision correction. It is ISO certified and it is the recipient of Frost and Sullivan Award under the Eye Care Centre (Lasik) category. The eye care centre has served 100,000 satisfied patients to date with its team of in-house engineers and doctors specialising in vitreoretinal, cornea treatment and paediatrics.

Optimax, which adopts the Vision For Life programme and offers a lifetime warranty for patients, now has a private eye specialist hospital in Penang with two more centres in Sri Petaling and Ipoh.

However, it is not all about dollars and cents for Sandy when it comes to running Optimax. Corporate Social Responsibility is as important as growing the brand. “We do a lot of charitable programmes and we are starting a foundation to do Lasik for the poor,” she said. Optimax has also provided over 200 free cataract operations for poor patients. Optimax is also one of the sponsors of the WAKE program hosted by Agape Vision and regularly offers free eye checks to residents of various orphanages and old folks homes in the country.

Also, there are plans underway to collect preloved glasses disposed by Optimax clients and donate these glasses to orphanages and old folks homes in Penang. “Some of our clients who have their vision corrected do not need glasses anymore so we will collect all these glasses, change the lenses and donate it to children and senior citizens in those homes,” she said.

It is without a doubt that under Sandy’s leadership, Optimax Eye Specialist is heading towards a bright future as a company with a heart and an eye for the future.

Debunking Breastfeeding Myths

“While breastfeeding may not seem the right choice for every parent, it is the best choice for baby. – Amy Spangler”

There is plenty of helpful information about breastfeeding as well as plenty of misinformation that would hinder successful breastfeeding. Below are some common myths that need to be corrected.

Myth 1 – Breastfeeding will come naturally

Breastfeeding is natural and normal but not necessarily easy! 92% of new mothers had at least one concern on the third day of breastfeeding (eg. poorlatching, low milk supply, breast pain) (Pediatrics 2013). Unfortunately, most mothers are discharged 2 days after delivery and the period immediately after delivery is the most challenging for breastfeeding. Mothers can get help from a breastfeeding support group or a lactation consultant.

Myth 2 – Pain is normal

Breastfeeding is not always painful. There may be an initial tingling sensation but if baby is properly latched, it should not hurt. Mothers are taught holding positions for bottle feeding. Try reclining with the baby’s weight against the mother’s body.

Myth 3 – Need to top up as your milk supply is low

For the first 3 to 5 days after delivery, mothers do not produce much milk but they produce a thick concentration of liquid (colostrum) that the newborn needs. At birth, the fullterm newborn’s stomach is the size of a marble (5 ml) and grows gradually in a week to the size of a chicken’s egg (20ml).

As a lactating mother’s breast is always making milk, thus the emptier the breast, the faster milk is produced to replace it. If a mother consistently waits until her breasts ‘fill up’ before she nurses, her body may get the message that it is making too much milk and may reduce the total production.

Myth 4 – Your new born will feed every two to three hours with each feed lasting for 30 minutes

Frequency of feeding will vary according to the mother’s milk supply, storage capacity and baby’s developmental needs. Growth spurts and illnesses can temporarily change baby’s feeding patterns.

During breastfeeding, the initial portion of the breastmilk (foremilk) has a lower caloric level compared to the latter portion of the breast milk (hindmilk), which is higher in fat content. Hence, putting arbitrary limits on frequency and duration of breastfeeding may lead to inadequate caloric intake. In other words, milk production has been shown to be related to feeding frequency, and milk supply declines when feedings are infrequent or restricted.

Myth 5 – Never wake a sleeping baby

Newborns should be awakened to drink, if necessary, at least 8 times a day. In fact, newborns who experience early skin-to-skin* contact immediately after birth for at least one hour (‘The Golden Hour’) are more likely to latch on well, especially if the mother did not receive medication during the labour or birth. It has been shown that separation, results in delayed response to feeding; exhibiting shutdown behaviour which in turn can affect feeding. (*baby naked, not wrapped up in blanket and place on mother’s chest or abdomen)

Myth 6 – A bottle or pacifier can create

nipple confusion

It is not so much ‘confusion’ but ‘preference’! Even though it would be easier to suck milk from a bottle compared to suckling from the breast, early introduction of a bottle or pacifier before breastfeeding is well-established is discouraged as breast and bottle feeding require different oral motor skills. Rubber or silicon nipples provide a type of ‘super stimulus’ that can result in inappropriate sucking technique on the breast when babies switch between breast and bottle.

Myth 7 – You cannot breastfeed if you had

Women with breast implants have been able to lactate successfully especially if incisions were made on the underside of the breast. Women with breast reduction may have more difficulty especially if the nerve endings around the nipple have been cut. (American Soc. of Plastic Surgeon, 2011)

Myth 8 – Breastfeeding helps to lose weight

Breastfeeding helps to lose 300-500 calories per day but your body needs energy (read: calories) to create breast milk. It is recommended that a few hundred extra calories are taken during the breastfeeding period.

Breastfeeding mothers may actually gain weight as many of them commonly experience ravenous hunger while feeding. Together with hormonal (prolactin) changes it can lead them to hang on to pregnancy weight or gain more weight. Hence, mothers should try improving the quality of the food and snacks and keeping up with fluid intake for weight control.

Myth 9 – Women who breastfeed get less sleep

Sleep deprivation is an inevitable part of having a baby which begins during pregnancy, when sleep needs may increase due to discomfort and frequent trips to the bathroom which interfere with a full night’s sleep. This is compounded in the postpartum period.

Studies have shown that not only do breastfeeding mothers get more sleep, but the sleep they get is of better quality when baby is in proximity to the mother. It was shown that breastfeeding mothers who bedshare got the most sleep. Mothers who were bottle feeding got the same amount of sleep whether their babies were with them or in another room. (Quillin & Glenn 2004).

Myth 10 – Breastfeeding is birth control

Breast feeding can be an effective birth control ONLY if certain conditions are met: such as baby is younger than 6 months of age, exclusive breastfeeding (no supplemental feeds of water, formula) only, mother has not started having periods. With these factors, the mother has a more than 98% protection against pregnancy.

As soon as there is a decline in breastfeeding, due to the baby eating supplemental feedings or nursing less often, the contraceptive protection decreases.

The reality is that all women can breastfeed, have enough milk for their babies and learn how to overcome problems both large and small. It is almost always simply a matter of practical knowledge and not a question of good luck.’ – La Leche League

Relationship 亲情牵心

PINKGUY Gallery hosted Asian sculptor Chng Huck Theng’s bronze work for the second time entitled ‘Relationship’.

The exhibition was probably the first of its kind in Malaysia where there was only one artwork on display and it was kept in an exclusively handcrafted blue wooden box specially designed to keep the bronze sculpture. Guests were kept wondering if there was an exhibition as there were no signs of sculptures being displayed like the previous one. The official unveiling of the sculpture was by none other than the Director General of National Visual Art Gallery Malaysia Dato Dr Mohamed Najib Ahmad Dawa. The gallery managed to secure ten pieces from a limited edition of seventeen for this exhibition. Owner of PINKGUY Gallery Winson Loh said that he always has confidence in Chng’s work as it is not only unique but it carries meaning. Eighty percent exhibited were collected on the night.

Inspired by the fact that an ordinary civilian plane MH17 could just be shot down from the air by a missile even when it was unprovoked, Ch’ng was saddened by the unfortunate incident but he chose to reflect his feelings and emotion by creating the sculpture ‘Relationship’ which captures the essence that reminds people not to take life or relationship for granted as it may be here today and gone tomorrow. The sculpture depicts an old man and a little girl standing on a wreckage looking up to the sky, wondering what they would have done otherwise if time could be reversed.

Living life, loving someone and caring for others only make sense if they are still alive. Regretting after everything has gone is meaningless.

PINKGUY画廊举办亚洲当代雕塑家庄学腾 2016年第二次青铜作品展 “亲情牵心”。

这是马来西亚首次举办的特别展出,因为会场只有一个艺术作品。有一个特别设计的蓝色木箱,把独家手工制作的青铜雕塑保存在内。它引起参观者的疑惑和怀疑,这场展览会是否真在进行中?因为这不像马来西亚国家视觉艺术画廊总监拿督莫哈末纳吉博阿末达瓦博士主持开幕礼,画廊在十七项限量版作品中,收藏了10项。另外,策展人 Winson Loh非常喜爱庄学腾的作品,其中八个雕塑也已经找到买家了。

一班普通的民航机MH17也可能只因一个无端发射的导弹,而在半空中被击落下来,这宗不幸的事件让庄学腾感到非常难过,于是他选择通过雕塑创作“亲情牵心”,反映出他的感情和情绪,提醒人们别认为生命或亲情是理所当然的,因为它今天在这里,但明天可能就离开了。此雕塑作品描绘一个老人和一个小女孩站在残骸上仰视天空,思考如果时间可以逆转,他们将会做什么?

人生在世,唯有活着,爱人和关心他人才有意义。一切逝去后才来遗憾,是毫无意义的。
