Celebrating the Greats

Entering its 6th edition, CHT Awards is now officially known as the CHT International Awards. This prestigious award presentation is no longer just recognising local Malaysians’ achievements, but also adopting a new category that honours international recipients who have remarkably contributed to their respective societies. With its motto of ‘Outstanding Leaders & Great Organizations’, president Ch’ng Huck Theng who also founded CHTNetwork had a vision to forge the spirit of ‘Where All Good Things in Life Meet’ – creating platforms where friends can meet to further explore possibilities and potentials. CHT Awards was one of the brainchild to unveil the contributions of individuals and organisations to the public; it also creates an opportunity for others to meet the greats in person. This one-of-its-kind award strives to acknowledge people and organisations from different industries and countries through real merit and contributions and not solely on fame and fortune.

Tokyo prior to 1968 was known as Edo, a small castle town in the 16th century but today it is the world’s most populous metropolis and one of Asia’s must visit destinations for unlimited choice of shopping, entertainment, culture, art and dining. Not to mention the rich history offered by this city to visitors is beyond words can describe. If one only have a few days in Tokyo then…

Ueno Park

Ueno is a good choice for those who seek a walk in the park and a chance to visit a few museums at close proximity. Ueno Park is famous for its cherry blossoms that bloom in Spring and lotuses that flower in Summer. Nearby are the National Museum of Western Art, Tokyo National Museum, Tokyo Metropolitan Museum and the Tokyo Cultural Hall. Children will love the zoo in the park. Next to the Ueno station is the Ameyayokocho Market where one can again wander around shopping for miscellaneous that include clothes, bags, shoes, etc.

Kabukichō

Shinjuku is one of the busiest place in Tokyo where the JR train station here serves more than 3.5 million passengers a day. There are large scale shopping stores such as Time Square, Keio department store, Isetan and many more. It is almost impossible to tell one how to walk around Shijuku as it is a big area with too many shopping and entertainment. Stamina and deep pockets are very much needed in this area.

When the sun sets, then that is the time when Kabukicho comes alive and the dancers strip. The place is relatively safe at night but visitors should be careful of scams and pick pockets. There are a few good Ramen stores around where one can request another two extra ramen noodle free of charge if you have such big stomach.

Akibahara

Akibahara or Akiba in short is well known for being the world leading electronic place. Not only this is the place for those looking for the latest electronic gadgets, it is also the mecca for otakus. Visiting anime or idol fans from near and far will visit this place especially on Sundays where many be in their manga, anime and Japan cosplay. Some may consider this culture twisted especially for those with traditional up-bringing or conservative mind-set but to others, it is an opportunity where the virtual world comes alive.

Sensoji Temple

If you only have time to visit one temple then the Sensoji Temple located in Asakusa will be the perfect choice. This is Tokyo’s oldest and one of the most popular yet most colourful temples. It is hard to miss this temple as it has a big red lantern with Japanese wordings written in black hanging in front of the main entrance. Upon entering, visitors will be greeted with a 200 meters shopping street called Nakamise that have interesting small shops selling from typical Japanese souvenirs such as folding fans, chopsticks, etc., to local traditional hand made snacks. Only after walking through the centuries old shopping street then one will approach the main hall and the five starred pagoda. There are many events held throughout the year here and the annual festival of the Asakusa Shrine, the Sanjay Matsui held in May is the biggest.

‘THE WHITE PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD’ “白人评选大奖”

The 88th Oscars was yet another glamorous success for those in the movie industry. Host Chris Rock actually did a good job playing down the #OscarSoWhite controversy by tackling the topic head on commenting on the black issues and hit a home run with ‘the White People’s Choice Awards’ statement.

As for the winners, Leonardo DiCaprio finally got to make his Best Actor acceptance speech after five nomination whereas Brie Larson clinched the Best Actress with Mark Rylance and Alicia Vikader for Best Supporting Male and Female roles. While Best Picture went to Spotlight, Director Alejandro G. Iñarritu won the Best Director for the second year in a row. It was not just a night about winners and losers but it was also one of the most important nights for the stars showing off their sparkling jewelleries and beautiful luxury outfits competing for attention.

BUILDING CONFIDENCE THROUGH BEAUTY

Dr Lee Kim Siea

Consultant Plastic & Aesthetic Surgeon
of Carl Corrynton Medical Center (CCMC)

Enhancing natural beauty

The world of cosmetic surgery is often misconstrued as one that is the unnecessary pursuit of the rich and famous but the truth is that this branch of medicine is equally important for the average person and the less fortunate. EZ had a chat with leading cosmetic surgeon Dr Lee Kim Siea on his profession and the beauty of it.

EZMY-Cover3

The ability to turn something that is physically flawed into something flawless and beautiful is a talent not everyone can boast of but this is exactly what Dr Lee Kim Siea does almost on a daily basis. The consultant plastic and reconstructive surgeon may have been in this medical field for over two decades but he is still very much committed to working his magic for patients craving aesthetic changes.

“I chose to go into this field because the ability to correct deformities and deficiencies fascinates me,” Dr Lee, who has his own practice at the Carl Corrynton Medical Centre, said. The Carl Corrynton Medical Centre is a centre of excellence for cosmetic surgery, anti-aging and regenerative medicine. For Dr Lee, cosmetic surgery is all about helping patients by correcting their deformities/deficiencies and maintaining beauty for self-confidence, it is about enhancing natural beauty and not about total dramatic change.

“I want to correct deformities in patients so that they have a reasonable appearance to lead a more normal life in society,” he said.

Looking at the successful 55 year-old surgeon today, one would not have imagined that he came from humble beginnings. He was born the sixth child out of nine siblings in a poor family in Subang New Village, near Kuala Lumpur.

His chosen career path was not something he had dreamt of when young as it seemed to be an unreachable goal at that time. Amidst the poor background, Dr Lee worked hard at school, taking on holiday jobs. He obtained good grades. That opened doors for him to pursue medicine at the prestigious medical school in University of Malaya. His exceptional results also led to much needed study grants.

At medical school, Dr Lee was exposed to various fields of medicine and he developed an interest in surgery. He had initially chosen to be an orthopaedic surgeon when he was shown how a defect was reconstructed with microsurgery during a Clinical Cases Conference but later changed his mind to pursue plastic surgery. “I want to correct deformities in patients so that they have a reasonable appearance to lead a more normal life in society,” he said. He also likes the idea of giving his patients their self-confidence back by making them look good.

The initial interest in correcting gross deformities progressed to include correcting deficiencies, refining features and shape to enhance what nature has given, as in his tag line – Enhancing Natural Beauty.

“Cosmetic surgery is not just about physical appearances but it is also very much about giving our patients dignity and confidence to feel good about themselves by making them look good,” Dr Lee said. Dr Lee graduated in 1986 and worked in various hospitals before he obtained his surgical fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in October 1992.

He worked as a general surgeon and started training for plastic surgery in the United Kingdom in 1992. He went on to spend four years in the UK and by 1996, he was given the Postgraduate Diploma in Plastic Surgery by the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

Dr Lee started his current practice at Carl Corrynton Medical Centre in June 2013 and after almost three years, the centre is now one of the leading centres for cosmetic surgery, anti-aging and regenerative medicine. Prior to that, he had worked in various government hospitals before moving to Penang to work in Loh Guan Lye Specialists Centre. He was with Loh Guan Lye Specialists Centre for 15 years before striking out on his own at Carl Corrynton.

Nowadays, Dr Lee performs surgeries for both local and foreign patients, working his magic to make them look better and younger. Some of the more popular procedures he performs include eyelid surgery, BTA and Filler, fat grafts, facelifts, nose enhancement, laser-based procedures and also various body contouring procedures including breast enhancement. He finds it satisfying that after each procedure, his patients would come back happier and more confident. “It is very heartening to have patients coming back to me to tell me how much younger and better they look and feel after I treated them,” he said.

He may be at the top of his field now but Dr Lee is not one to rest on his laurels as he makes a point to attend courses to educate himself and keep himself updated in his field. He regularly attends medical conferences and due to his experience and expertise, he is often also one of the invited speakers in such conferences.

Looking forward, Dr Lee hopes to continue building up his cosmetic/aesthetic practice to be a plastic surgeon of distinction and living up to his tag line ‘Enhancing Natural Beauty’.

“I want my patients to look good at any age.” he said.

TOUR DE FORCE OF MALAYSIAN TOURISM

Dato’ Mirza Mohammad Taiyab

Director General of Tourism Malaysia

Dato’ Mirza Mohammad Taiyab is a driving force behind the country’s rapidly growing tourism industry today, and it all stemmed from a youthful penchant for visiting new places, seeing amazing sights and experiencing different cultures.

The current Director General of Tourism Malaysia has spent most of his professional career promoting the Malaysia brand and enticing people all over the world to visit this vibrant multi-cultural nation. It was a path chosen long ago.

Growing up in the small town of Bagan Serai in Perak’s northern Kerian district, he was a member of the scout movement and would often go for camping trips and cycling excursions. His parents also frequently travelled around the country, and took him along.

“I developed an interest for travelling and nature, and that gave me an idea of what kind of profession I would choose after finishing school. I wanted something to do with travel,” he recalls.

Upon completion of his Senior Cambridge, he pursued his tertiary studies at UiTM, earning a Diploma in Tourism Administration, followed by a Degree then Masters in Business Administration.

He started off with a short stint as a contract manager of a motor trading company, before joining the then Tourism Development Corporation (TDC) in 1982 as an assistant director in its develoment and project management division.

Mirza then served as Director of the corporation’s Frankfurt office in Germany, overseeing promotional activities in Europe, followed by a similar posting as director of the Tokyo office in Japan. After 14 years in these posts, he was elevated to Director of the International Promotion Division.

He became Deputy Director General of Tourism Malaysia in 2004, and finally Director General in 2006. In all, he has served under 7 Tourism Ministers, and seen a paradigm shift in global travel and hospitality trends.

“When I started, the industry was very Euro-centric, and most tourists came from Europe or Australia. Back then, China, India or ASEAN countries weren’t regarded as a major source of tourism.”

“Things have since changed, and tourism today is very regional, with ASEAN now the focus. And Malaysia, being centrally located, gets a lot of interest from Singapore, Brunei, Indonesia, Thailand and also China. “

“The brand is everything. We have added value to the name by adding ‘Truly Asia’ 15 years ago, to tell the world they can find a little sample of the continent, in Malaysia – a place where diverse peoples practice their own cultures and lifestyles, all living together in harmony and building the country.”

The country on track to achieve its target of 36 million tourists by 2020 under the Malaysia Tourism Transformation Programme, and hopes to generate RM168billion in revenue, more than double the current figure.

“When it comes to value of services, from hotels to shopping and food and beverage, Malaysia is one of the most attractive places in the world for that,” Mirza notes.

With tourism being an industry that deals with good times, his ascent through the ranks at Tourism Malaysia has been memorable. In particular, he fondly remembers the Visit Malaysia years in 1990, 1994, 2007 and 2014.

But there has also been frustration, like when tragedies happen. All it takes is one untoward incident, often beyond their control, to dissuade people from visiting.

“In 2014 for example, we were geared up to achieve a target of 28 million visitors. But then there were air tragedies, massive flooding, and security incidents. When these happen, you have to double your efforts to overcome it as quickly as possible,” adds Mirza.

He is confident the industry will continue to grow. The country is on track to achieve its target of 36 million tourists by 2020 under the Malaysia Tourism Transformation Programme, and hopes to generate RM168billion in revenue, more than double the current figure.

While he has never thought of quitting tourism and doing other things, he would like to share his knowledge and experience with the younger generations so they can also venture into the industry better prepared to face its challenges in the years to come.

“The young who wish to go into the tourism industry needs to know there is a lot of backend and behind the scenes work going on. One must be ready to operate from the back, before finally enjoying the fruits of being in front.“

“Every holiday period or festive season, one needs to sacrifice their own holidays, to ensure visitors enjoy theirs. Your holiday will have to come later, perhaps when you retire!” quips the father of three, who has been married for 22 years.

“Tourism is an industry of the future, and one of the fastest growing in the world. In years to come, technology, economy and security advancements will bring the world closer, and lead to more people travelling.”

“And that will help bridge peoples. For by appreciating and understanding each other’s cultures, and working together towards a common goal, we can all build society and make the world a better place to live.”

Celebrating a decade of contemporary luxury with ESSENZE

Impressively contemporary and bold, leading lifestyle magazine, Essenze, celebrated its 10th Anniversary this year with a strong presence taking root in Australia through Essenze Australia.

A publication by MarketSource, under the main CHTNetwork, this magazine is one that is aimed at showcasing a lifestyle of lavishness, a world of arts and travel, leaders of industries and impressive leisure activities.

The very first edition of Essenze was published in 2005 to fill a niche for luxurious lifestyle magazines that not only informed, but also highlighted world medicine, art, travel, leisure, fashion and significant people and personalities. The publications evolved throughout the years from a new little-known magazine to become one of the leading international lifestyle magazines in Malaysia.

Today, Essenze is not just a magazine but an important component in the ever-growing network of business connections and friends under CHTNetwork. It has become the glue that brings connections together, an important component to draw people and brands together and a formidable publication to be reckoned with.

Essenze Australia was introduced early this year 2015, again, to fill an important niche for a luxury lifestyle magazine in the land down under. The introduction of the bilingual magazine outside of Malaysia is one that led to a showcase of international supreme brands and the people behind some industry, thus, creating connections between brands, businesses and people.

Both magazines will continue to forge new paths in the publishing industry, to bring across clients’ message to the targeted audience in Malaysia, Australia and other countries, including China.

Cooking His Way to the Top

Martin Yan
International Celebrity Chef

“As an Asian, I feel that I have a responsibility to promote Asia and to inspire young Asians all in the spirit of ‘Yan Can Cook’.”

Many years before the term “celebrity chef” were coined, there is one familiar chef who appeared on TV regularly sharing easy to follow recipes. Chef extraordinaire Martin Yan of “Yan Can Cook” is almost a household name due to his successful series that had spanned decades. Here, the chef shares his success story with ez and talks about the challenges he faced before receiving international acclaim.

He first started by helping a friend in a restaurant in Canada located near the TV station and one day, he was asked to fill in for a chef that didn’t turn up for one of the TV shows. That was Yan’s big break in TV and a few years after that fateful day in 1978, PBS debut “Yan Can Cook” with Yan as the host. The rest, as we say, is television history as Yan went on to become a phenomenal success and today, he has more than 3,000 episodes of “Yan Can Cook” under his belt.

The series was such a success that Yan became a well-known celebrity chef the world over and currently, he also hosts the “Martin Yan – Quick & Easy” series. However, easy as it seemed, Yan admitted it was a tough road to travel before he reached such success.”I came from a very poor family and my mother sent me off to study in Hong Kong at the age of 12 but the one thing my mother told me, that I will always remember, is to always be humble,” he said.

Yan may have travelled around the world and have rubbed shoulders with other celebrity chefs like Anthony Bourdain but he is determined to keep his feet strongly planted on the ground. “There is this Cantonese saying “people are afraid of becoming too famous and pigs are afraid of becoming too fat” so I always tell people that there are so many great chefs out there who are much better than me,” he said. His down-to-earth demeanour and humbleness has earned him many close friendships and almost guaranteed his continued popularity as a celebrity chef.

Yan took a trip to Malaysia for his upcoming travel and food programme “Taste of Malaysia” recently. The China-born Hong Kong-American said he visited all the states in Malaysia to showcase not only the food but also the places of interest.”I am proud to be an “ambassador” for Malaysia to showcase its wonderful food and its beautiful destinations,” he said. On the 26-episode programme, Yan said it will place more emphasis on traditional fare of the Asian culture and how it has evolved over time.

“Taste of Malaysia”, which will be aired on NTV7, 8TV and Asia Food Channel (AFC) in Malaysia, is expected to reach a wide audience of up to three billion people worldwide when it is aired in September. “As an Asian, I feel that I have a responsibility to promote Asia and to inspire young Asians all in the spirit of ‘Yan Can Cook’,” he said. The upcoming series is more than a cooking show but a promotion of local flavours, heritage, culture and arts, Yan said.

Yan has not been to Malaysia for over 18 years until middle of this year and he finds that the country has much to offer in terms of variety of food, culture and traditions. “Malaysia is different from other countries I’ve been because it has diversity due to its multi-cultural, multi-ethnic and multi-religious society,” he said. Yan visited Penang for five days, documenting the local hawker fare before he went on to other states in the country.

When asked if he will consider retiring soon, Yan said his “work” is not done and it will never be done. “What I’m doing now is not a job but a passion and there’s no retiring from my passion in life,” he said. The 67-year-old added that he has friends in their 80s and 90s who are still cooking so there’s no reason for him to stop cooking and hosting his cooking, food and travel shows.

After Malaysia, Yan will continue his work as an international food ambassador by visiting more countries to showcase their food while at the same time sharing his passion for food and Chinese cooking.
