A Touch of Pawson

Jaffa Hotel_2Jaffa Hotel_6

John Pawson, a British architectural designer whose work is known for its minimalist aesthetic, has restored a former French hospital and monastery in Tel Aviv‘s oldest, most vibrant neighborhood into the Jaffa Hotel. Together with conservationist architect Ramy Gill and a team of restoration experts, Pawson transformed the 19th century, Neo-Roman landmark for over a decade, maintaining the raw untouched surfaces and blending old with new.

The hotel occupy adjacent plots by the sea in Jaffa – Tel Aviv’s oldest district. Pawson has added a new six-storey wing to house 38 luxury apartments overlooking the 4,000-year-old port, the Mediterranean sea, and the city. The design merges Pawson’s minimalist style with traditional Middle Eastern architecture, converse with mid-century design classics from Shiro Kuramata and Pierre Paulin, topped with modern art by Damien Hirst.

Alongside photography by Israeli artist Tal Schochat, the remnants of a 13th-century crusader’s bastion wall, uncovered during the excavation of the project, is now part of the modernist lobby.

The hotel is developed by New York-based hotel and real estate company RFR Holding and operated by Marriott’s luxury collection of hotels & resorts.

Guide To Your Investment Journey

RHB Premier.png

Several months ago in 2017, Malaysia’s stock market seemed robust and full of potential, however, today there are rumours of an impending slump in the market due to various factors. On that note, Malaysia’s first quarter performance in 2018 has indicated a less than impressive earnings performance. Although investment experts explain that markets tend to rise and fall, it is always wise for one to be cautious and well-informed of how to navigate the volatile market place, while achieving positive outcomes.

To strike a good balance, the buzzword today is to consider goal-based investing which is to simply prioritise a series of key life goals and objectives, and duly put away funds with a view to accumulating these goals a somewhat complex affair.

“Recognising that our customers need help in navigating a complex market environment with the aim of optimizing returns from their investments, we have set in place a five-year strategy that is aimed at delivering greater value to our customers. One of the core areas of our FIT22 strategic direction to gain greater market share in the affluent segment through differentiated products and services which offer greater value and helps customers to strengthen financial portfolio and achieve their goals,” explains Dato’ Khairussaleh Ramli, Group Managing Director, RHB Banking Group.

Less than a year ago, the global investment environment was awash with positive sentiment. Technology stocks were the darlings of the fund management industry, and seemingly everyone wanted a piece of premium tech equity. Malaysia’s own stock market was rosy; for a while in the 2017 in- vestment climate, it almost seemed impossible to lose money.

Fast forward to today, and the conversation has turned distinctly from one of unbridled optimism in company earnings, to whispers of the next market slump. Malaysia’s stunning General Election results this year further threw a wrench in an already softening financial market. Malaysia has seen a less than impressive earnings performances in quarter 1 of 2018. But why is this relevant? Markets may rise and fall, but the need to fund major financial milestones is constant. The market may well be softening, but you can ill-afford the same fate for your finances.

Building the nest egg

So, you’ve resolved to take the bull (market) by the horns and get your long-term finances in order. Well done, but the challenge is only just beginning. Goal-based investing, that is, prioritising a series of key life goals and objectives, and then putting away funds with a view to accomplishing these goals, can be a complex affair. Not everybody has the funds to accomplish all of their goals, so prioritising is key.

In this regard, Encik Nazri Othman, Acting Head of RHB Group Retail Distribution opine allocating different weightages according to the urgency of these goals. Once you know how much you’re willing to commit to which goals, start working on these goals as early as possible, and let the compounding interest do all the hard work. As a general rule, a goal with a longer-term horizon can have a more aggressive investment allocations, while shorter-term goals should ideally be played more safely. Short-term investing typically lasts no more than three years or so, which means you’d need a larger than normal initial investment amount. Alternatively, one might have to commit to fairly frequent top-ups in order to achieve the goal, if there is any shortfall. However, being short-term does not mean being reckless; over a shorter-term investment horizon, your allocations should mainly go into defensive as- sets such as investment grade bonds with shorter maturity dates, as well as resilient blue-chip equities with strong dividend track records.

Advise from the experts is always welcome, but even so, investors should never take their eyes off the prevailing investment climate. Managing volatility can mean all the difference in terms of having enough for your children to take their pick of the top universities. It may be understandably tempting to make a play for a bit of alpha and go bargain-hunting in the current softening environment. However, undervalued equities should not be the sole reason for diving headfirst back into the current equity market. So, what is a person to do in this softening environment?

Common Investment Goals

In the view of Calvin Goon, Head of Affluent, WM & Banca, RHB Bank, investors to stay invested, but to also periodically rebalance their portfolios in order to keep up with market forces and the overall outlook. After all, money hidden under the bed is money that isn’t working for you. Softening markets can offer alluring opportunities to bargain hunt, sure, but it is also a good time for goal based investors to strategize and go defensive with their portfolios. Calvin further explained that funds have flowed out from equities and the high yield space, into investment grade bonds. Investors would be well advised to revise their asset allocations to favour inflation-friendly commodities like precious metals, downside protected structured products, as well as investment grade bonds. These assets will be more appropriate in late economic cycles or even periods of recession.

General Manager of Thai Airways International

The balance between staff welfare and company policies, is hard to achieve but very crucial. I strongly believe in staff development and maximum skill-training.  The happiness quotient of every member of staff is also important.

Built like a football linebacker, Tishti Sumitra is equally formidable in a suit and the corporate realm. As General Manager of Thai Airways International for Malaysia and Brunei, his boyish smile and charm can easily thaw the most rigid opponents or negotiate multifaceted deals with ease and success.

Responsible for a gamut of portfolios, from sales to passenger comfort, his leadership style is hailed as refreshing, gentle and result-oriented. “The key to a successful company is team work and I try to be accessible to my staff most of the time.  The balance between staff welfare and company policies, is hard to achieve but very crucial. I strongly believe in staff development and maximum skill-training. The happiness quotient of every member of staff is also important.”

While Sumitra appoints a higher level of principles for himself, he shares that, “Every moment with Thai Airways is a good one for me. Self -discipline is paramount and one should not only rely on rules and regulations to do the right thing. Doing the right thing should come from the heart and mind.”

Born and bred in Bangkok, Sumitra studied engineering in the Chulalongkorn University before furthering his education in Italy at the Politecnico di Torino (The Polytechnic University of Turin), an engineering university based in Turin, Italy. He studied MIS, majoring in multimedia.

Self -discipline is paramount and one should not only rely on rules and regulations to do the right thing.  Doing the right thing should come from the heart and mind

Before joining Thai Airways in 1999, he dabbled in software sales and even held a brief tenure with the Science Museum in Thailand. He was posted in Laos before heading the Malaysia and Brunei offices. What is his biggest challenge in running one of the top premium airlines in the world?  “Speaking to the press,” he says with a wink. He is reticent but there is a force about him that is reassuring.  “Every Thai Airways moment counts – the experience, friends and business acquaintances, the successes, trials and tribulations.  I find tremendous pride in working for one of the best airlines in the world.”

“The market is tough but my mission here is to strengthen the Thai Airways presence in this region. This year Thai Airways bagged the Skytrax Awards for World’s Best Economy Class, Best Economy Class Onboard Catering, World’s Best Airline Lounge Spa, Best Cabin Crew in Thailand and Best Economy Class in Asia. We have Michelin-Star chefs designing our catering menu.” With those accolades, everything should be smooth as silk.

(The Polytechnic University of Turin)

Always Learning To Be A Cut Above The Rest

Datin Winnie LooDatin Winnie Loo

Director of a A-Cut Above Salon and Academy

“It’s ironic, but I’ve always had this urge to know and learn more. You can never stop learning and to stay competitive and successful, you have to keep learning.”

To remain a cut above the rest, it’s a continuous journey to keep learning, unlearning and relearning. Success is easily achieved but it sure won’t last forever if you become complacent.

This philosophy applies to almost everything in life, especially in business and it’s something that Datin Winnie Loo practices to be and remain the successful business woman that she is today.

For someone who is known locally and internationally for A Cut Above – her chain of high-end salons and impressive repertoire of global hair and fashion shows, the learning never stops.

“I’m going back to my studies, more specifically to do my MBA in the Asian Metropolitan University and my dream will be to graduate in 2020. My business celebrates its 40th anniversary next year and it has achieved many milestones, but finishing my studies has also been on my bucket list for some time,” says Winnie, who was to begin a tertiary course in chartered secretarial studies some 40 over years ago, but she deferred it to study at Morris Masterclass, a Vidal Sassoon school of hairdressing, in London. From there she studied under Vidal Sassoon and in 1979, started A Cut Above in Malaysia.

Loo’s own A Cut Above Academy is a five star government rated and international institution that prides itself by giving students the knowledge and practical skills to become hairstylists, beauty therapists, make-up and special effects artists of the future.

So, resuming her studies means that she will be the student, and no more the teacher. “It’s ironic, but I’ve always had this urge to know and learn more. You can never stop learning and to stay competitive and successful, you have to keep learning.”

“Every challenge is a lesson for you to become better, to find yourself and to find success. I feel that the current trend of doing business such as crypto currency, online investments and online fame is somewhat easier and fast paced – if done well, the rewards are almost instant. When in my time, I had to go through the grind of investing in my first physical shop where the returns only came much later,” she explains.

Aside from continually learning and then training the next generation about exceptional styling and hair-dressing, Loo also wants the 40th anniversary of her business to leave a legacy.

“It won’t be a one day event because it’s been four decades, so it’s going to be a big bash over a whole year. We’re talking about throwing staff parties, galas and even awards for loyal clients, long time associates and suppliers. It’s mainly like a big ‘thank you’ to everyone who’s been with us through the years as we wouldn’t be where we are today if it wasn’t for them,” explains Loo.

Datin Winnie loo_1.jpg

A Cut Above Academy

Women’s Reproductive Health

Part 2 : PERIOD PAIN (DYSMENORRHOEA)

by Dr. Mecherl Lim

MD (MA) Naturopath (ND), Holistic Kinesiology

This is lower abdominal pain that commences just before or during menstrual flow, the first 24 hours being the most painful.

About 70 percent of women experience some degree of menstrual pain.

WHAT ARE THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS?

The pain may be gripping, cramping or a constant ache, and it ranges from mild to severe.  Sometimes it spreads to the back and down the legs.  Period pain may sometimes be accompanied by scanty or heavy flow with clots, headaches, nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhoea, sore breasts or dizziness and fainting.

HOW IS IT DIAGNOSED?

A medical diagnosis is required to find out if the pain is menstrual or something else.  Primary dysmenorrhoea is normal menstruation that is accompanied by pain.  Secondary dysmenorrhoea is linked to a cause such as endometriosis, fibroids or polyps.

WHAT CAUSES IT?

Primary dysmenorrhoea is caused when the uterus contracts to eliminate its lining.  Women with period pain probably have high levels of prostaglandins and these compounds over stimulate the uterus.

Secondary dysmenorrhoea has a medical cause such as fibroids (obstructive internal uterine growths) that cause the uterus to contract more powerfully than normal.  Intrauterine contraceptives are also linked to period pain.

HOW ALLOPATHY DOCTORS TREAT IT?

Primary dysmenorrhoea

  • Painkilling drugs, such as paracetamol
  • Prostaglandin inhibitors, such as ibuprofen
  • Oral contraceptives often eliminate period pain

Secondary dysmenorrhoea

The medical treatment depends on the cause and may involve hormones, anti-inflammatory pharmaceuticals or surgery.

PHARMACEUTICAL USE

All drugs have a long list of cautions and adverse effects, as you will see from package inserts or by looking at the MIMs Annual in your library.  Not everyone experiences side effects and you may need to take a strong, quick acting medication for severe symptoms and particularly for pain. If a few over the counter painkillers, such as paracetamol, prevent period or other pain, then that’s the simplest most effective and economical treatment-and it’s unlikely that you will experience side effects from taking, say, two to six tablets a month.

THE HOLISTIC APPROACH

Bed rest with abdominal heat (such as a hot water bottle) is a standard recommendation. This works better if you gently massage about six drops of lavender oil onto your abdomen before applying the heat and lie on your back with a large pillow under your knees.  A combination of eucalyptus and peppermint oil also helps some women and this combination may prevent a headache if you put a few drops on the back of your neck and one drop on the end of your nose.

Herbs : Specific herbs such as cramp bark and wild yam, Chaste tree, Dong Quai, Red Raspberry leaf, False Unicorn, Feverfew, Cinnamon helps to relieve pain and inflammation and reduce the need for pharmaceutical painkillers.

You can also use Dr. Mecherl SHE 18 which is already a combination of the above herbs and you can also see the tea recipe under “Endometriosis” Supplements.

A combination of evening primrose and fish oil works well (and even more so if vitamin E is in the formula), such as Dr Mecherl Femi Vita M or Femi HH.  Neuromous (Magnesium) is sometimes helpful,  I recommend these daily for three months, and if effective relief is relieved, reduce the dose to two weeks, then re-evaluate every few months to find the lowest helpful dose.

This type of schedule works for a number of natural remedies and the aim is to find the lowest helpful dose that works in your case. Subsequently, some women stop taking all remedies, although their pain may recur following illness or major stress.

Other remedies are exercise such as easy yoga may help ease abdominal tension and improve blood flow and therefore reduce pain.  Some women say a glass of wine or a nip of brandy helps!

HOW CAN YOU PREVENT?

Regular exercise throughout each month generally relieves congestion and stress.  Also, you will see under “Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) that a scientific trial showed that a vegetarian diet helps reduce period pain.

GOOD ADVICE

Always do something about pain, because it increases inflammation, prevents sleep, may cause depression and blocks enjoyment.

Why are we so afraid of Infertility? Dispersing the taboo of infertility

Dr Ng Peng Wah

Fertility Specialist, Obstetrician and Gynaecologist Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists in United Kingdom

We sat down with Dr Ng Peng Wah from Genesis IVF and Women’s Specialists to discuss infertility and the taboo surrounding it. Genesis IVF is Penang’s premiere IVF centre aimed at providing effective infertility treatments with world-class facilities to help patients deliver their dreams of having a baby.

Q: What is infertility and what are the steps someone who has problems conceiving should take?

NPW: Infertility as defined by World Health Organisation (WHO) as the inability to achieve pregnancy after trying for 12months without using contraceptives. If female patients are above the age of 35, they are considered suffering from infertility if they have been trying for 6 months.

The best action to take is also the most direct one – patients should come to see a fertility specialist so that the cause of infertility be identified so that a proper treatment can be attempted.

Q: What are some common causes behind infertility and the treatments to overcome it??

NPW: Infertility causes are varied but it can equally be male or female factors.

A common problem for male infertility is the inability to produce an adequate amount of viable sperm due to endocrinal, physical, chromosomal or other issues.

One of the most common female infertility problems is caused by ovulation. Ovulation problems are often caused by polycystic ovarian syndrome, which is a hormone imbalance problem that causes infertility. Another common ovulation problem is primary ovarian insufficiency (POI), which occurs when a woman’s ovaries stop working properly.

A woman’s age plays an important role in infertility as it has been statistically proven that women over the age of 35 face increased infertility problems. One of the most effective methods is In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) in conjunction with other technologies to augment a patient’s pregnancy rates. The beauty of IVF is that it helps overcome many infertility problems including: Blocked tubes, polycystic ovary syndrome, endometriosis, premature ovarian failure as well as low sperm quality.

Q: What are the technologies that can augment a patient’s pregnancy rates?

NPW: We employ techniques such as Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) for patients suffering from low sperm quality to overcome male infertility by manually injecting a sperm into the egg to eliminate the problems of low motility sperm.

Additionally, we have Preimplantation Genetic Screening (PGS) offered to patients to ensure only chromosomally normal embryos are transferred into the mother’s womb. Embryos with abnormal chromosomes usually do not survive pregnancy; even if the pregnancy is successful, the child born with chromosomal abnormalities will be born syndromic such as Down Syndrome, Edwards Syndrome, Patau & Klinefelter. Chromosome defects are one of the most common causes for miscarriage, especially for women over the age of 35.

Q: Before we end do you have any advice for couples facing infertility?

NPW: As a fertility specialist, it is our duty to advocate and educate the public that Infertility is a disease and like any other diseases, couples with infertility should seek out treatment to overcome this disease.

Pottinger The Heart of Hong Kong

Don’t judge the book by its cover is exactly what many will agree when it comes to Pottinger Hong Kong. Situated right in Central, this is not a 5 star boutique hotel that one will expect until walking through the main door into a small but beautifully designed lobby and being received by very polite and welcoming staff with big smiles. Unlike some of the big brands with massive rooms and tall buildings, Pottinger Hong Kong houses only 68 luxury rooms with an award winning Italian restaurant Gradini Ristorante E Bar Italiano serving not only fine Italian cuisine but also a popular afternoon tea for those who desire elegance with a touch of creativity.

Gradini_Interior_high ceilingUnlike others, Pottinger Hong Kong is perfectly located in between Hong Kong’s heritage and modern vicinities. Pottinger Street nearby itself is a prime example of the island’s rich and varied past. Named after the first Governor, Henry Pottinger, this boutique hotel is the hotel where East meets West and Heritage meets Modernity. Any visitor whose ultimate visit is to experience the true spirit and energy of Hong Kong, then Pottinger Hong Kong is definitely the hotel for you.

After breakfast, just around the corner, one can find street stalls selling varieties from Donald Trump’s masks, tourist products to fresh juice aligning the steps luring visitors to spend a few bucks. Walking a few hundred steps up and one will wander onto the first road Hong Kong built in 1844 – Hollywood Road, a place that is famous for its antique dealers, curio merchants and art galleries. If it is already time for lunch, then look for any Michelin star or guide or Hong Kong typical local down to earth coffee shop style will definitely be an experience. From the top, tourists may travel back down by taking the longest outdoor covered escalator system in the world, while exploring the boutique shops around. Usually by this time, the day would be hot if not raining. This is a good time to make an effort to connect with old friends or associates and the best place to meet and chit chat is non other than having a much needed relaxing hi tea in Pottinger Hong Kong. A sip of fine wine and tasting the little unique classy bites with good friends around is a perfect lifestyle that money cannot buy.

After tea, a quick shut eye, a good bath and getting ready, Hong Kong nightlife is yet another adventure one should not miss. One of Hong Kong’s most popular heritage restaurant is just 5 minutes walk from the hotel. Yung Kee is famous for its finger licking good roast goose and fine Chinese culinary dishes. Dinner probably will finish around 9.30pm or 10pm. Don’t be surprised to see a lot of people walking up and down Lan Kwai Fong when you walk out the restaurant because the night is still young and this is when the party begins. Lan Kwai Fong is the place to be when it comes to dining, drinking, socializing and loud music. People there are usually very friendly. Don’t worry about getting drunk and not being able to go back to the hotel as it is only 5 minutes away by foot. After a long day, rooms in Pottinger Hong Kong are considered above average in size and very good in terms of feel and comfort.

For the remaining days in Hong Kong, Central station is just 5 minutes away conveniently connecting almost all tourist and popular destinations including Disneyland and Airport Express. In short, Pottinger Hong Kong is the hotel one should seriously consider if convenience, class and lifestyle experience are what one is looks for when visiting Hong Kong.
