“It’s ironic, but I’ve always had this urge to know and learn more. You can never stop learning and to stay competitive and successful, you have to keep learning.” 

To remain a cut above the rest, it’s a continuous journey to keep learning, unlearning and relearning. Success is easily achieved but it sure won’t last forever if you become complacent.

This philosophy applies to almost everything in life, especially in business and it’s something that Datin Winnie Loo practices to be and remain the successful business woman that she is today.

For someone who is known locally and internationally for A Cut Above – her chain of high-end salons and impressive repertoire of global hair and fashion shows, the learning never stops.

“I’m going back to my studies, more specifically to do my MBA in the Asian Metropolitan University and my dream will be to graduate in 2020. My business celebrates its 40th anniversary next year and it has achieved many milestones, but finishing my studies has also been on my bucket list for some time,” says Winnie, who was to begin a tertiary course in chartered secretarial studies some 40 over years ago, but she deferred it to study at Morris Masterclass, a Vidal Sassoon school of hairdressing, in London. From there she studied under Vidal Sassoon and in 1979, started A Cut Above in Malaysia.

Loo’s own A Cut Above Academy is a five star government rated and international institution that prides itself by giving students the knowledge and practical skills to become hairstylists, beauty therapists, make-up and special effects artists of the future.

So, resuming her studies means that she will be the student, and no more the teacher. “It’s ironic, but I’ve always had this urge to know and learn more. You can never stop learning and to stay competitive and successful, you have to keep learning.”

“Every challenge is a lesson for you to become better, to find yourself and to find success. I feel that the current trend of doing business such as crypto currency, online investments and online fame is somewhat easier and fast paced – if done well, the rewards are almost instant. When in my time, I had to go through the grind of investing in my first physical shop where the returns only came much later,” she explains.

Aside from continually learning and then training the next generation about exceptional styling and hair-dressing, Loo also wants the 40th anniversary of her business to leave a legacy.

“It won’t be a one day event because it’s been four decades, so it’s going to be a big bash over a whole year. We’re talking about throwing staff parties, galas and even awards for loyal clients, long time associates and suppliers. It’s mainly like a big ‘thank you’ to everyone who’s been with us through the years as we wouldn’t be where we are today if it wasn’t for them,” explains Loo.

这一理念几乎适用于生活中的每件事物,尤其是在商业领域。这也是马来西亚美发造型界领军人物拿汀卢妙卿(Datin Winnie Loo)所努力追寻,维持今日成功商业女性面貌的原因。

她一手创办在本土和国际上有口皆碑的 A Cut Above 高端沙龙连锁店,令人叹为观止的全球杰出发型设计和精彩时装秀,都诠释了学无止境的真谛。

而她宣告即将再重返校园,更具体地说,是在亚洲城市大学 (Asian Metropolitan University) 攻读 MBA 学位,并期望在 2020年毕业。明年她所打造的事业将迈入40周年,纵然取得许多关键里程碑,但是完成学习研究也在她的心愿清单里搁置了一段时间。这一切都是从 40 年前开始,卢妙卿本来应该就读特许秘书课程,但却推迟上述课程,而选择在伦敦的维达沙宣(Vidal Sassoon)美发学院进修 Morris Masterclass。之后她在维达沙宣手下学习,并于 1979 年在马来西亚创立了 A Cut Above。

A Cut Above Academy 是一家获得政府评鉴资质的五星级国际机构,给与学生们相关知识和实践技能,让他们成为未来出色的发型师、美容师、化妆师还有特效师。

因此,恢复学习意味着她将成为学生,而不再是老师。“这有点讽刺,但我一直都有这样的冲动,想深入了解和获得更多。同时为了保持竞争力和成就,你永远不能停止学习。”

“每一次挑战都是锻炼,让你变得更好,找到自己和成功点。我觉得目前的商业趋势就像数字货币,在线投资或传播,非常容易掌控和快节奏-而且如果做得好,可以立即获得回报。在我创业的时代,我必须经历投资第一家实体店的重重难关,那时的回报也相对缓慢。”

除了不断学习和培训下一代针对美发专业和美妆造型创新开拓之外,卢妙卿还期望企业40周年纪念能够留下难忘的馈赠。估计这不仅是一天的活动,因为已经走过 40年,所以这将是一整年的盛会。他们正在讨论举办员工聚会、联欢会,甚至奖励忠诚客户、长期合作伙伴和供应商。

“主要是对每一位和我们并肩走过这些年的人们由衷的说一声“谢谢”,因为如果没有他们,我们就不会有今天。”

One of Hong Kong’s most popular heritage restaurant is just 5 minutes walk from the hotel. Yung Kee is famous for its finger licking good roast goose and fine Chinese culinary dishes. Dinner probably will finish around 9.30pm or 10pm. Don’t be surprised to see a lot of people walking up and down Lan Kwai Fong when you walk out the restaurant because the night is still young and this is when the party begins. Lan Kwai Fong is the place to be when it comes to dining, drinking, socializing and loud music. People there are usually very friendly. Don’t worry about getting drunk and not being able to go back to the hotel as it is only 5 minutes away by foot. The Straits Chinese Antique Auction’s Special VIP Preview by MNP Auctioneers saw many Peranakan antique collectors and enthusiasts gathered  at the Seri Negara, Carcosa Seri Negara, the iconic national heritage site of Malaysia. The event was sponsored by Asian Heritage Museum Sdn Bhd. Renown artist cum collector Ch’ng Huck Theng was invited to share about his collection ideology and he also donated his book ‘The Surviving Pieces’ for sale where all proceed goes to charity. Furthermore MNP Auctioneers presented RM10,000 donation to the social tenant of Carcosa Seri Negara, Asean Heritage Museum to support their effort to build a regional peace museum.

Sculptor Chng Huck Theng achieved another milestone in his art career when invited for his first solo exhibition entitled ‘IMPerfect Creation’ in Singapore at MOCA (Museum Of Contemporary Art) @ Loewen. Guest of Honour for the official opening of IMPerfect Creation was H.E. High Commissioner to Singapore Dato Zulkifli Adnan. Dato Zulkifli in his speech praised the hard work the artist had put into creating ‘ugly’ pieces that are beautiful if one actually took the time to understand the concept of … ’if one cannot see ugly, one cannot see beauty’.

CEO of MOCA@Loewen further added that this is the first time the institution hosted a top Malaysian sculptor and he believed that the artist would do well as he was not only a creator but also a thinker. 16 very interesting bronze sculptures that captured a lot of interest and attention. The event was attended by art lovers, collectors and friends.

雕塑艺术家庄学腾受邀在新加坡 MoCA@Loewen-当代艺术博物馆举行个人特展“美丽与丑陋创作 – IMPerfect Creation”,这是他艺术生涯的又一个里程碑。而驻新加坡高级专员拿督 Zulkifli Adnan 阁下担任开幕嘉宾,他在开幕演讲中高度赞扬这位艺术家在创作时所付出的心血,他认为,如果真正花点时间理解“丑陋”的概念,会发现美丽,但如看不到丑陋,那么同样看不到美丽。MoCA@Loewen 的首席执行官进一步补充说,这是该机构首次举办马来西亚顶级雕塑家的作品展,他相信艺术家本身的实力,因为他不仅是一个创作者,而且是一个思想者。16件精彩创意的展出青铜雕塑作品吸引了许多目光和关注。艺术爱好者、收藏家和朋友们皆出席观赏这项展出。

Olivier Krug : The Law of Attraction in A Champagne Empire 香槟帝国的魔力法则

Looking to hear the cork pop and the stream of fizzy bubbles ooze from a bottle of Krug’s Grande Cuvée? Dubbed as the King of Champagne, Krug’s champagne is still in a league of its own in comparison to other bubbly we see in the market. Olivier Krug is a sixth generation Krug and the Director of the House of Krug in Reims, France. He is a passionate father of four, and has tastes for the finer things in life from an early age.

His love for the motherland and its produce resulted in a life-long passion for the art of harvesting some of the finest champagnes in the world. His parents bore 5 children, and today, he remains the only child directly involved with this family business. He recalled his early childhood surrounded by grapes, the people and the aromas of the vineyard: “When I was a little boy, no more than 7 or 8 years old, I would ask my dad to take me around. I loved sitting in a corner, listening to him while he was talking to the growers and tasting grapes.”

Although Olivier’s father has taught his son everything that he would need to know about champagne-making, the young boy, however, did not immediately grasp the monumental reasons in indulging in the process. In fact, this bubbly wine, which we call champagne, can only be made in one place in the world – France.

Olivier grew to be an indispensable part of the Krug business and later, found the reason why the Krug brand is a worldwide commodity and phenomenon. “We create the Krug every year because we want to offer Krug to Champagne lovers, a champagne with quality that is unquestionable.” With unquestionable quality, comes unquestionable dedication. “You have to care for details, look at everything, forget nothing, care about the people. A good business is the consequence of good work. Therefore, the reason should not be the objective, because it’s all about how you make it.”

To enjoy a glass of champagne, Oliver suggests abandoning the champagne flutes for a Joseph glass, which will allow the bubbles to reach their optimal expression. He compared the experience of tasting champagne using a champagne flute to “going to the opera with earplugs”. Apart from using the right utensil, Oliver also suggests chilling the bottle at an optimal temperature to release the maximum wine aroma. To top that, what could be better than pairing champagne with good food and music? So choose wisely, because all champagne is not created equal.

Olivier travels around 100 days in a year to bring the Krug brand abroad and introduce the taste of the finest champagne to the world.

尽管父亲教会了他一切关于香槟制造的常识和秘诀,但小男孩并没有马上领会与沉迷于香槟制造。事实上,这种我们称为香槟的气泡葡萄酒,只能在全球一个地方酿制,那就是法国。

Olivier Krug 逐渐成为 Krug 商业品牌中最核心的一环,再后来,他发现了 Krug 成为全球知名香槟品牌的原因。“我们每年都要生产香槟,因为想为香槟爱好者献上最好的 Krug 香槟,确保毫无疑问的品质。而毫无疑问的品质也与毫无疑问的奉献相关。你必须注意细节,观察每一件事,关心着人们的感受。最好的经营是优良工作付出的体现。因此,理由不应该是客观的,因为一切都取决于你如何去做。”

为了享受一杯香槟,Olivier 建议放弃笛形杯而用 Joseph 杯,让气泡达到最佳的展现方式。他把用笛形杯品尝香槟的体验比作“戴着耳塞去看歌剧”。除了使用正确的餐具,他还提议在最佳温度下将瓶子冷却,最大化的释放葡萄酒香气。此外,还有什么比香槟配上美食和音乐更好的呢?所以更要明智地选择,因为并非所有香槟都是生来平等的。

Oriental Red Seafood Market is not your normal neighbourhood seafood restaurant. With no prix fixe menu, diners are given the flexibility to handpick their own desired seafood from the seafood counter.

The seafood comes in a wide variety, with some fresh and some frozen. Selected seafood will then be cooked by the dedicated team and served in the way of Nabe (Japanese Hot Pot). It is noteworthy that the special broth for the Nabe is authentically prepared in Japan and air-flown to the restaurant.

This year for his Spring Summer collection, Ziad decided to celebrate the ‘Goddess of Wheat’ and ‘Mother of the Earth’ in his recent creation capturing the sacred offering where the Goddess gather fruits of the earth and offers them to humanity. This designer cleverly absorbs the colors of Mother Nature’s creation such as gold for wheat, blue for sky, green for earth etc. into the dresses paying tribute to the most iconic representation of the goddess Demeter. This is a collection designed specially for a strong woman, assumed, voluntary but also and especially generous, inspired by one of the most favorable deities to humans, as a symbol of accomplishment and peace.

Rolex is introducing three new versions of the GMT-Master II with a brand new movement, the new-generation calibre 3285, and a new image. The new version, in Oystersteel, is equipped with a bidirectional rotatable bezel and a 24-hour graduated two-colour Cerachrom insert in red and blue ceramic. The lugs and sides of its Oyster case have been redesigned, and the watch is fitted on a five-link Jubilee bracelet.

Rolex has pioneered the development of special ceramics for monobloc bezels and bezel inserts that are exceptionally resistant to scratches and corrosion, and offer particularly intense colours that are unaffected by ultraviolet rays. The new GMT-Master II version has a red and blue ceramic insert which represents the most iconic of all GMT-Masters since it launched in 1955.

In addition to the conventional hour, minute and second hands, which display the local time at the wearer’s current location, the watch features arrow-tipped hand which circles the dial once every 24 hours. When the bezel is in the neutral position, that is with the triangle at 12 o’clock, the 24-hour hand displays the reference time, or home time.
The Oyster case represents a symbol of waterproofness to a depth of 100 metres, and the crystal Cyclops lens i/o crystal lens at 3 o’clock for easy reading of the date, is made of virtually scratchproof i/o scratch-proof sapphire.

However this leading brand in luxury watch making since 1955 is returning to its roots by decorating the dials of its new Admiral Legend pieces in entirely natural materials with eight variations crafted from mother-of-pearl or wood, the brand is reconnecting with its original heritage of artistic crafts while building on the marine inspiration of its Admiral collection. Featuring three hands and date, a chronograph or small seconds, the eight new Legend pieces are expanding the horizons of the Admiral collection. These models come with a satin, steel or vulcanised rubber bracelet and are available in 32 mm, 38 mm or 42 mm sizes.

The new Legend pieces stay true to the Admiral spirit with a dodecagonal bezel, dauphine hands, an automatics calibre, 12 pennant-shaped hour markers and an open screw-down case back. Every single one of the mother-of-pearl models (32 mm and 38 mm) presents a slightly different dial composition, as this natural material is unique by nature. Each piece is hand-assembled to form lively designs where the dial endlessly plays with the light, shifting from shades of blue to green and then to grey.
