“We must mix and match the old and young talents.  We can always learn a lot from the new generation.”

‘Mottainai’ is a Japanese exclamation that conveys regret over waste.  Listed as one of their corporate core values, Ken Holdings Bhd is Malaysia’s multiple award-winning green developer, and an important component of the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange.  Not a bad show for someone who describes himself as a young and die-hard upstart businessman in the early 80s. Today as group executive chairman of Ken Holdings Bhd, Dato’ Kenny Tan is still the genteel, modest and earnest person that he was decades ago but with added impact, wisdom and even more humility.  Heavily invested in social and environmental responsibilities, this real estate mogul shares, “We strive to remain aware of our effect on the environment, and in the spirit of Mottainai, embrace sustainable practices to prudently and wisely use our resources.”

Operating from his plush office on the 12th floor of Menara KEN TTDI, Ken Holdings continues to make its mark as a leader in green building design.  What started as a specialist engineering firm in 1980, branched out to construction, development and finally, the coveted listing.  “It has always been my aim to get the company onto the KLSE.”  With projects all over Malaysia, Ken Holdings is proud to call Menara Ken TTDI, Ken Bangsar, Ken Damansara, Ken Aman, Ken Rimba (current), Ken Kota Bahru and Ken Johor Bahru, their own. His successes can be attributed to a singularly firm principle – “You promise, you have to deliver” – heavyweight words from a real estate developer.

With the KLSE buckle firmly on his belt, and Ken Holdings operating like a well-oiled machine, Dato’ Kenny Tan is delivering more than prestigious homes and smart commercial spaces these days. An avid and discerning collector, great patron and supporter of the arts, Tan recently launched Ken Gallery at Menara KEN. The 20,000-sq-ft art space houses his private collection and an impressive display of local and foreign works. “I have been collecting art for more than 30 years, mainly Chinese paintings, ceramics and antiques.  Previously, most of my acquisitions were kept in stores, my home and office. I am hoping to strengthen my collection as well as show more of Malaysian art through Ken Gallery.”

As a conservationist in nature and art works, Dato Kenny Tan is also a keen restorer and philanthropist. Ken Foundation represents a charity arm that provides scholarships for deserving students to study architecture, business, art restoration, marketing and human resource.

“I think the Malaysian art industry is in neglect. Malaysian artists are not earning what they should. It’s better now but in the early 70s, Latiff Mohidin’s Pago Pago was only sold for RM20,000”, says this art enthusiast who once modelled for Ahmad Zakii in one of his paintings.

Zakii may have immortalised Dato’ Tan in a painting, but his son Sam Tan stands in good stead to carry on Tan senior’s legacy at Ken Holdings Bhd. With an engineering and law background, Sam is at the helm of the company as managing director. The proud father shares, “Doubtless, I will continue to work for as long as I can but we must mix and match the old and young talents. We can always learn a lot from the new generation.”

Rise to the Challenge

Calvin Goon

Head, Affluent Segment of RHB Banking Group

“The Malaysian banks are pursuing SMEs as part of an expanded mandate to help grow its affluent base,” said Mr. Calvin Goon, Head of Affluent Division of RHB Banking Group.

Rising above economic challenges, growing the affluent target segment Mr. Calvin Goon, Head of Affluent Division of RHB Banking Group explains how to move the market forward during challenging times.

It is no secret that industry observers of Malaysia’s wealth management landscape believe that the next decade will be increasingly challenging for the high net worth (HNW) individuals who are constantly seeking higher yields while grappling with an uncertain economic outlook. Factors such as the growing complexity in China’s credit space, Brexit and the Euro uncertainty are cause for major concerns as with the issue of central banks shifting gear from accommodative to tightening which pose serious challenges to banks in moving the affluent market forward.

High net worth individuals from Malaysia and around the world are concerned with three main issues, namely inheritance, global economy and tax. In turn, banks are looking to introduce new propositions, products and solutions to address clients’ concerns. Looking to small- and medium-sized enterprise space (SMEs), there are many untapped opportunities for the banks to work on.

“These clients are more sophisticated and will demand customised products and solutions. They prefer more attentive services due to the nature of their business.”

“The Malaysian banks are pursuing SMEs as part of an expanded mandate to help grow its affluent base,” Mr. Calvin Goon, Head of Affluent Division of RHB Banking Group says. “The potential synergy will be beneficial during this challenging period.”

Taking into consideration this group of SMEs as well as the HNW investors, a more specialised and personalised approach is required. In line with this, RHB Bank created the Private Clients and Business Services segment to hold their assets that are in excess of USD1 million and above.

“These clients are more sophisticated and will demand customised products and solutions,” explains Mr. Calvin Goon. “They prefer more attentive services due to the nature of their business.”

Growing the affluent market means working harder for the clients with customised solutions. The engagement between the bank and these clients is vital, as it boils down to the overall client experience and the impression built from these efforts. It inevitably means not losing any of their capital while seeking returns.

With the inflation surge becoming a global phenomenon, Malaysians also find their incomes eroding from the depreciation of the Ringgit over the past few years. The solution to this could very well be linked to foreign currencies. By providing the benefits of diversification and lessening of risks, these measures could verily mitigate the rising economic challenges.

Celebrating 70 Years on The Road

It all began in 1947 with the launch of the 125 S, Ferrari’s very first car that carries the Ferrari badge, that made its track debut at the Piacenza Circuit. Driven by Franco Cortese, the 125 S went on to win the Rome Grand Prix, completing the 40 laps and the 137 km of the race at an average speed of 88.5 km/h – the first of six victories in 1947 alone.

To mark Ferrari’s 70th anniversary of icon Technological excellence and performance, it launched LaFerrari Aperta, the limited-edition special series model and the spider version of the acclaimed LaFerrari supercar. It is equipped with the same hybrid power unit as the coupé: an 800 cv 6,262cc V12 engine (specific power output of 128 cv/l, compression ratio 13.5:1) coupled with a 120 kW electric motor for a total power output of a 963 cv.

Very first test drive on the streets of Maranello with it’s Italy marked the start of modern Ferrari history which that grew from the then-modest factory into one of the greatest internationally-renowned ‘Made in Italy’ icons.

The Hot Culture of Haute Couture

set design image-1

How does fashion transcend virtuosity and timelessness? In a 1953 etching that turned up in the Dior archives, Albert Decaris retraces Dior’s expansion around the world in a map. Then, there’s the couturier’s assertion in his autobiography titled ‘Dior by Dior: “A complete collection should address all types of women in all countries.” These inspirations have led Maria Grazia Chiuri, the Artistic Director of women’s collections, in creating the Autumn-Winter 2017-2018 Haute Couture collection that celebrates the House’s 70th anniversary.

Chiuri’s designs is a symbolism of a desire for faraway lands, the need to travel to discover the world and oneself, to feel emotion, grow and evolve; her own journey from Rome to Paris and her exploration of the Dior heritage. She is inspired to draw elements from the masculine wardrobe and mixing them with ethnic pieces. Stephen Jones, the milliner celebrates his 20th anniversary this year as Dior’s hat designer and artist Pietro Ruffo designed the décor that retraces the Earth and the celestial sphere with poetic grace.
