LohGuanLye Specialists Centre (LSC) celebrated a significant milestone as it marked 50 years of compassionate care, medical excellence, and steadfast service to the Penang community. Founded in 1975 on the vision of its late founder, Dato’ Dr. Loh Guan Lye, the Centre has grown from a single block into one of the region’s most trusted healthcare institutions — shaped by people, purpose, and progress.

From Block 1 in 1975 to the Women and Children’s Wing in Block 2 in 1993, and the addition of Block 3 in 2009, LSC’s physical expansion reflects a deeper growth driven by its people. Chief Executive Officer Dr. Mary C.H. Quah, who has served the organisation for 43 years, believes the journey has always been about human dedication. With doctors serving for over four decades and staff building lifelong careers within the institution, LSC exemplifies loyalty, mentorship, and a shared commitment to investing in human resources and the future of healthcare. This people-first philosophy is evident in the LSC Nursing School, which has nurtured clear career pathways from Ward Assistant to State Enrolled Nurse (SEN) and State Registered Nurse (SRN), shaping generations of healthcare professionals who form the backbone of the Centre’s workforce.

To commemorate its golden jubilee, LSC curated a series of meaningful anniversary celebrations culminating in a special evening programme. The event featured welcome addresses by Chairman and Managing Director Mr. Kelvin Loh, Executive Director Mr. Nicholas Loh, and Dr. Mary C.H. Quah, alongside special tributes and a retrospective highlighting the hospital’s five-decade journey. Cultural performances by doctors and staff added a personal touch, while long-service awards honoured team members whose dedication has shaped LSC’s legacy. The celebration also included donations to five NGOs, affirming the Centre’s continued commitment to social responsibility and to the community.

Extending its anniversary message beyond the hospital walls, LSC also launched the “50 Trees for 50 Years” initiative at the Penang Botanic Gardens. The programme saw the planting of 50 Italian cypress trees, each symbolising a year of LSC’s journey in delivering quality healthcare and service excellence. Joined by management, doctors, nurses, staff, and representatives from the Penang Botanic Gardens Department, the initiative reflected unity, growth, and hope for the future. It also highlights LSC’s commitment to sustainability, environmental stewardship, and alignment with Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) initiatives — reinforcing the belief that caring for people goes hand in hand with caring for the planet.

Built by Penangites, owned by Penangites, and sustained by Penangites, LohGuanLye Specialists Centre looks ahead with the same promise it began with: to put people first, supported by the best in human resources and technology — as it continues its legacy of care for the next 50 years and beyond.
